exhaust sound
Ok question on a certain exhaust tone for the max. When I hear the WRX sti go by and they have this real nice low grumble that sounds mean. Not that hi pitched rice exhaust of the likes of a lawn mower on speed. Can someone tell me what exhaust do the WRX's run and do they make that exhaus for the max. Ist it just a muffler or y pipe or what.

personal preference is the Cattman - probably would need the full package (headers, catback)

well if u knew about wrx's they get the LOW RUMBLE from being a boxter motor. they usually get a downpipe and a catback, leaving one cat left, in the up-pipe. take that out and then they can get really loud.
now a maxima wont really sound ricey because its a v6. but, it def be raspy if not setup rite. ide say if u had headers, no cats, and a catback it would be pretty loud unless u had some resonators.

I have the Greddy Evo2 cat-back with a cat-delete test pipe. It has a pretty low rumble, my guess would be because of the 4" tip... Most EVO's/WRX's have a large single tip.

wow i just looked. The WRX only has 224 hp and 226lb ft. Would a 2003 Max take it in the 1/4 stock to stock (add the GAB to the Max)?
The STI is prob the car that sounds mean as it has more powerthat the stock WRX.

I posted the exact same thing, wanting an exhaust not loud/ricey sounding for my 3.0 which being smaller i thought would be a good chance it could happen. I ended up getting the cattman mid-pipe and a Flowmaster delta flow 50 series 2.5" in and out. It sounds good, i'm actually slightly dissapointed at how quiet it is, its really not loud at all just a little above stock. Its got a little rumble @ idle and you can hear it inside the car but it doesnt resonate and get rediculously loud, so i like it.
If i was going to go louder i'd get the 40 series instead. This is also just to save money, i didnt have another $350 for the catt. rear, the flowmaster was 87 bucks shipped.

Most 5.5th gens (even autos) can beat a WRX, especially on the roll...so you'd eventually pass him I suppose.
WRX's are relatively heavy, suffer from drivetrain losses from 4wd, and the smaller motor all play into how it fares beyond the launch.

Get a dynomax super turbo muffler with 2.5" pipe. You'll get a nice low rumble without a lot of noise.

Hey Law,
I may only have a few posts but im not new to the car scene. I own a 68 camaro with a 357 (350 bored 40 over) and 450 horse and it sounds totally different from anyone else that has a 350. You can take 2 350's with different horsepowers and the same exhaust and you will have 2 totally different sounds. So im sure a 224 hp wrx sounds slightly different than a 300 horse sti with and exhaust. But my 15 years of experience wouldnt have anything to do with that.
Just an edit to this to. To get that extra 80 horse im not up on subs but im sure maybe a slightly different grind on the cams and maybe some work on the heads. All this will make an engine produce a totally different sound.
