Can you identify what this is under car? (pic)

I was looking under my car the other day and I saw this rope-like thing hanging down. The picture was taken on the drivers side of the car facing the front of the car. The rope is attached to a bolt. I'm just trying to figure out why it was just hanging there not attached to anything. I didn't see any wires running through it. It sort of feels like a thick shoelace. Does anyone know what this is?

Hmm, I wonder if this has anything to do with why I'm getting code 0420 for the cat.

This strap helps ground the exhaust and in turn your O2 sensors.
Of course the exhaust manifolds bolt to your heads/block which is grounded but the gaskets used throughout the exhaust system prevent a good consistent grounding point. You can imagine that proper O2 feedback is important for the ecu therefore this grounding strap is necessary.
Don't throw it away as someone else stated.

How is a shoelace attached to a bolt hanging from the bottom of a car work as a grounding strap?

But the end that's hanging looks torn, like it was ripped off from something. Is the end that's hanging supposed to be attached to the cat?

It's there for a reason. Look for the other end of the grounding strap.

The manufacturer felt that this grounding strap was important or they wouldn't have installed it in the first place. The length of this strap may have allowed excess slack which would allow it to get hung up on things below the car and get torn, as many have mentioned. You may not notice immediate problems, but as someone stated it could trigger a CEL, and potentially fail at inspection time. This particular strap on our cars connects to one of the ~17mm cat bolts.

It seems that some people, stardust, have no clue as to what is going on under an automobile. The majority of automobiles built today, use mulitple cats/O2s, and indeed have some form of grounding strap connected to the exhaust.

Mine as well as a few others I know for sure have removed theirs when it's come loose and have not had any adverse affects from doing so. It's been over 2 years for me, no codes. It's not that crucial.

With all the talk over the past year or two about grounding kits and what not, why wouldn't this be any different? If anything, I'd consider replacing the braded grounding strap with a thicker gauge, not removing it.

Grant it no one has seen any ill-effects from removing it, but why not take advantage of the grounding possibilities here.

Not to mention, it would increase good grounding to the O2 sensors as stated in previous threads.

Considering there are no O2 sensors anywhere near there on any Cali spec car like more than half of 00's, almost ALL 01's and all 02-03's... It is useless.

If you have a Fed Spec... It might be usefull, although very unlikely.

I just let mine hang... In case some very small person wants to Indiana Jones it underneath my car.

And if you really want to replace it, any of the bolts on the cat will do.

The cat has bolts coming out of it. The other end is held on between the cat bolt and a nut.

Both ends look identical

If I'm not mistaking, o2 sensors have each their own grounds anyway.

I've never seen that before, not even on my car, look like you ran over a jogger and caught his shoe lace, LOL. But that does look like a shoelace though but I never heard of any kind of grounding for a cat.

Apparently it grounds catalytic converter to prevent (slow down) it corrosion.

Ah yes, the Fleisman rod. I recognize it because it is just south of the Hammer-Dorfman joist assembly.
