We had a big snow storm last night here in Quebec City total at least 15'' of snow. In the driveway the snow was to my knees....no way a FWD with an ''open'' diff would have make it up the driveway. Oh by the way, car is lowered 1.8'' .

I love my HLSD in the snow

took me 45 minutes to get out of my spot to go to work last night (but that isnt snow. thats clumps of ice all around me from the plow and either side because of my neighbors) dragged my LTB and side skirts the whole way out

What tires do you have? I would imagine that the tires are more of a factor in being able to do that than the HLSD.

I saw so many cars struggle yesterday in only a few inches of snow. Took my friend 20 mins to get his accord out. Took me about a min.

Yeah, I managed to make it up a hill and through a huge snowstorm last march that even a bunch of 4x4 trucks couldn't do. Granted, it took a while, and some tricky driving, but I made it. Last year's Flagstaff, AZ snowstorm.

My open diff Max has no problem with snow... And trust me, I know snow.

I have gone up some steep hills in 14"+ of snow with very little trouble. Oddly enough, the car goes up the hills better with TC turned off...

Yup good tires are needed to have a good traction but here it's not a question, you must have winter tires.... HLSD would be helpless w/o them. Tires are Toyo Garit HT. I did compare this morning with my neighbor, same car with same tires w/o HLSD and he was crying trying to get out of his driveway

Traction control worked wonders for me going up hills and what not. Now stopping was a different story.

part of it is snow is different in different geographic regions. for instance out west its much dryer, where easy its often more wet and icier (sp?). none the less i do agree that max handles well in all conditions assumine ur tires are up to par.

20 minutes out of an iced spot in a big parking lot this morning. Doesnt help that my front tires are cheap generic and more than 1/2 worn. Car was completely iced over on one side. Have pics, will post later.

Sorry guys - I am not jacking the thread, but I have a question and I am a noob and cannot post.

After the snow yesterday (I live in NJ), I drove my car out for the first time. My 2002 was fine driving on the local roads but when I got into the turnpike, my steering wheel started to shake violently, like I had a flat or something. I stopped the car, and no flat.

I could not drive the car past 45mph without my steering wheel shaking. I had my tires (brand new) balanced and aligned about 2 months ago.

Everything was fine until this morning. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

It may be snow and or ice packed in your wheels. It throws off the balance of the wheels. This has happened to me on a number of different vehicles including my Max.

SNOW TIRES > HLSD

i have a hlsd...and basically new avid v4s's...and my car sucks in the snow, my gf's 99 strauts with new avid touring and a open dif is 10x better in the snow.

I would say that in the snow the max does great, but throw some ice on top and a cold night and it could make things difficult! I have Michelins on mine and I think they have pretty good tread on them but as soon as the max bogged down it wasn't going uphill had to turn around and go another way! I hate to admit that because I talk highly of my baby!

Would be interested to hear what SIZE tire your GF and the Canadiens r running??
A "skinnier" tire is proven to get better traction than a larger footprint version.
ie: 215/55/16 vs. a stock 225/50/17 .....the more narrow the footprint, the better traction you will achieve in the snow. Those who buy dedicated snow tires usually buy in smaller rim sizes as well as aspect ratios.

I know it sounds crazy, but it's true.

I tend to agree that tires have a great deal to do with it. Last year, i had the toyo proxes on, and although they weren't bad, this year, I've got Michelin Exaltos, and they have been amazing. It's webbed design really claw through the snow. Obviously on ice, it won't be as good, but after driving in a couple of snow storms with these, I've been quite impressed.

I siped my front tires and it seems to have made a big difference. I was able to get going up hills much better which left me spinning my wheels before.

Come on....the avid v4s's are all-season tires...don't get me wrong they are very good tires and permorm very well in dry/wet conditions but they really suck in snow.... winter/snow conditions = winter tires, period.

I know HLSD made a difference for me. I got stuck a couple times in my 02 but in the 03 i never got stuck I had all seasons on both. Pretty deep snow too...5-8inches

Man that's a crazy amount of snow. I'm almost certain my lowered maxima would be buried in snow that deep. I lost my nerve for snow driving on the stock bridgestone tires, as they provided almost no traction in any wet conditions. The continental contiextreme contacts provide for much more confidence, however I don't have snow tires, so I'd be hesitant to drive in something that deep.
