ABS LIGHT (Can it cause the whole ABS system not to work??)

I got a 2001 max and I got an ABS light on and I had an emergency stop today and the wheels locked up NO ABS pump NOTHING.

WHen you have a light on does it cause the whole system not to work?

Oh it seem like the right front tire locked more than any but its the driver side REAR sensor that is bad.

If one sensor is bad, the entire system wont work.

yup ill second that. i blew a tire which cut my abs wire in the rear and i had no abs for about a week with snow on the ground.

When you replace it does the light/system reset by itself or is it like a check engine light?

it should reset itself i believe.

the light didnt cause the problem
the problem caused the light to come on

If the light doesn't reset after repairing fully disconnect the battery (remove both positive and negative terminals). That should reset the light.

Uhhhhh...... he said the rear sensor was bad but was wondering if it caused his front wheel to lock up. and yes because of the rear sensor my guess is that abs will not work on any wheel. if your right side wheels both locked up and your left side didnt then you might have a problem. so when just get your rear sensor replaced and your abs light should clear out and abs should work fine, if that is the only problem. if it stays on then theres something else messed up.

Thanks guys. I already had it diagnosed and its just the one sensor. I appreciate the help.

Where can I find a write up on the replacement? I know theres the how to's but does anyone have a better one or different one?

do u have traction control on ur car? cuz im having the same prob only diff us that my tcs light is on along with the slip light... hope its just a abs sensor

Some OBDII scan tools have an ABS option. So, with that said, maybe try AutoZone.

A rough inspection might be on hand before taking it to someone/place that will read it.

Cipher reads these codes, not sure of the AE does though.

I figured it was, since you're one of the more 'alert' members.


But I just had to ask, since it's more common for the Brake light to 'go away' due to fluid level.

sometimes if one wheel spins more than the other or locks up, the ABS light will come on and stay on for a bit, when you restart the car and start driving again, the abs computer will recieve the signals from the sensors that all wheels are turning at the same speed and will turn of the ligh. That said, if your abs light comes on due to a "situatio" (whatever it might be), turn of the car, restat it and start driving normally and it should go off.

Also, those of you with TCS, the traction control system works using the ABS sensors, therefore, if your ABS light comes on, TCS OFF should come on too. Follow above procedure.
