idling, how much fuel does it really burn?

Yup I Read Somewhere That When You Let Your Car Idle Its Actually Getting Zero Miles To The Gallon Which Means Your Just Throwing Money At The Gas Station. But Isnt It Funny That We Need To Warm Up Or Car Because Thats When We Get The Best Fuel Ecomomy But Letting It Idle On Those Cold Mornings Loose Gas

Idling takes VERY LITTLE gas.
At HIN roll-in my friend's AE Max was idle for maybe 3 hours as well as keeping the revs up at 4-6000 rpms just to waste enough gas to make the 1/4 entrance rule.
We revved that shnitz for a LONG time. You'd be surprised at the gasoline economy of a Maxima. Wastes gas when you dont want it. Doesn't waste it when you need it.

I've read somewhere that letting your car idle for about 3 minutes uses about as much gas as starting the car. So, I shut the engine off if it takes more than 2-3 minutes to do what I've stopped to do.

so i guess there is no real measure
i guess one way would be to fill up at a gas station, leave your car running for an hour, and then fill up again right away, that should be a pretty good indication

The surprising definitive answer from guys who actually did research: 10seconds. Restarting a modern car with fuel injection only uses as much gas as idling for 10 seconds. So the only reason you should leave your car idling instead of shutting it off is if you plan to be away for less than 10 seconds. End of story. http://www.celsias.com/blog/2007/03/...0-second-rule/
