Motor Mount ?????'s Please help

I have a few questions...

my mounts def need replaced My engine is trying to hop out of the bay. I have dents on the underside of my FSTB and the top of the intake where it bangs against the FSTB.

1) Is this a home job or would I be better off having a mechanic do it?

2) What is the main diff between ES urethane and OEM mounts?

3) Are there any other recommendations...do I just buy mounts or is there additional items that will make the job simpler?

4) Approx cost associated with either option.

I got got poly ES bushings and am probably going to install the this weekend, i am actually buying a press to press them in but youd need a press to get them in. It doesnt seem to difficult but im sure more people will chime in that have done it before.

Only machine shops have those kinds of presses.

You might be able to press them out with a home press and a bit of rigging. I have seen it done with some of the rear suspension bushings.

If you are going to purchase the press just for this job, I would say don't bother. Find a local shop that will do it for a few extra bucks. Remove the mounts yourself and bring them to the sop and have them press the old mounts out and the new mounts in.

From the sounds of it the aftermarket mounts for the Maxima are full replacments, as opposed to inserts. This is actually good, since it sounds like the rubber in your stock mounts is shot.

The difference between the stock mounts and the aftermarket mounts is the material. Aftermarket mounts are usually made of urethane or some other material that is harder then the stock rubber. This, along with the fact that the aftermarket mounts are solid (no holes in it), will not allow your engine to move as much.

This will hlep you put power down better as well as reduce wheel hop (which can cause some serious problems). At the same time they will also transfer more of the engine vibration through the car. I don't think it is too bad, but some people can't handle it.

Good luck!

It might be possible without a hoist. I have done inserts on my Sentra by just supporting the engine with a floor jack (with a piece of wood to keep from denting the pan). Even with the cross member removed, there are still 2 motor mounts supporting the engine.

I guess it may be a bit more difficult if you are replacing all 4 mounts.

You actually don't even need to do that, although IMO it's a bit better...when I do mine, I'll use a piece of wood and support the transmission when I drop the cross-member.

the wood would provide enough support to do the job.

You can get these straight from autozone.

I did mine at my house using wood to support the engine. Its a pretty easy job to do, just drop out the cross member by taking out the 4 bolts that hold it in and taking out the bolt going through each motor mount.

As for pressing the old ones out and putting the new ones in, if you don't have a press, find one and have them press it in for you. You won't be able to do this by yourself and it will be a waste of time.

Definetly get ES or equivalent mounts. OEM are trash and are way too sloppy.

Yeah ES does not make the FRONT for A/T...Es are 3.5 bushing and auto are 4".

Brian Catts said he has ES for the rear but I will probably be stuck using the OEM in front. I just want to find out if the rear mount has power. I can see me using a better part but the F'in car may throw a code if it does not see power to the mount

You can still do it; just get a front motor mount from a MT and use the 3.5" ES inserts for both front and rear. You just have to leave the harness from the electric mount connected so that you won't get a CEL.

You mean just ZIp tie the harness someplace right...The ES inserts do not have the power connection

Yes, leave the actuator harness plugged in, but tie the other end up someplace, since it will not be connected to the mount.

Was it easy to align the crossmember when re-installing it that way?

I tried your way once (but with a small garage jack) and in comparison, having nothing under the tranny/motor actually made it easier to realign the crossmember when I had to put it back on. I usually loosely attach the four cross member bolts first to keep it from falling on my face when trying to get the motor mount bolts lined up. Obviously, it'll take a bit of shoving with one hand/elbow while trying to move the crossmember around.
