Frozen Gas Gauge??

Anyone else have this happen to them? When I turn my car off now, the gas gauge doesnt go down. Then the other day I was driving the interstate and my gauge said half tank, but my gas light turned on. then I go put gas in and the gauge doesnt move and my light went out meaning gauge is broke or just stuck?????

I checked and it looks like there's only one sensor in the tank feeding the gauge control unit that's just a variable resistor. The lower the fuel level the higher the resistance. When the resistance is high enough, the lamp switches on, but I have no clue as to how gauge controller makes that happen.
