02-03 Maxima 6spd. or Automatic?

Looking to upgrade from my 99 Max (Auto) to 02-03 Max. I'm not sure which transmission to look for. How much faster is the 6spd.? Can I get some pro's and con's for the two please? I appreciate it guys.

Six speed is always better.

You should know how $hitty the four speed auto's are for the Max... If there is one thing I hate about my Max, it is my auto tranny.

thanks for that link my dude, i know how ****ty the auto's are. I just got a little skeptical when I read this in newcartestdrive.com:

"We also spent some time in a Maxima SE with the six-speed manual. While we usually prefer shifting for ourselves, the six-speed had a notchy feel that will take some getting used to. Also, the throws are long. With so much torque from the powerful V6, little shifting is needed on winding roads to keep it in the power band. Six speeds are not needed. For these reasons, we recommend the automatic transmission for the Maxima. (It also seemed as though the steering felt better in cars with automatics; the steering felt lighter in the six-speed cars.)"

But I'll probably regret getting an automatic. So I'll get the 6spd.!!! =)

Definitely stick for sure... Not sure about you. But I have owned nothing but sticks. My last car I bought AUTO and after the 1st month I was wishing I had a stick.

I hate the stick at times, when I'm tired and lazy. But love it every other time, so it wins out.

my 2 cents...If you know how to drive stick or are willing to learn, and you are a car enthusiast then it is no contest, 6 speed all the way

Go for the 6 speed! You might spend more time waiting/searching for the right one to pop up that fits your budget perfectly, but its worth it, you'll love it. Good luck!

6 speed. the shifting gets a little getting used to. i recommend changing out the fluid with some amsoil tranny fluid. you can find a dude selling in the group deal section and from what i heard, it feels real nice. and you have surprisingly good pull at low rpms. i can go into 3rd gear at about 15 miles and hour and i can still go. lotta cars would bog at that speed.

Go for the 6 spd. I never even knew how to drive stick when I purchased it 4 years ago. It is not hard to learn but 1st gear really sucks with the DBW. You get used to it tho. It's almost better starting the car in second
Go with stick if you love the car, its an experience must.

Cheers

6 speed all the way. I owned an auto 5.5 before it met its maker. Now I have a 6 speed and let me tell you the 6 speed is much better. On the highway the speed can really move while the auto seem to run out of steam. Not the mention the 6 speed is just plain faster........

Guess im the only one that loves my auto. im an enthusiast but in my opinion, unless im getting my car to race it, etc, the only reason i'd want a stick is over 80 mph. People talk as if auto is the devil. It shifts great, picks up great, unless your tryna go over 120 which you shouldnt anyways. I love my auto, and i came from driving a 5-speed 4th gen. I've driven a 6-speed 5th gen, my boy has one, and dont get me wrong, it's sexy, pulls like a bat outta hell, etc...But i still prefer my auto. sit back cruise, no shifting worries, in a traffic jam? no problem. it's all personal opinion.

Thanks guys for all your inputs. I'll have to do some research on that watkins short shifter and ES bushings. I'm definitely going for the 6spd. =)

I've owned and built hot rods of all types some of which were pretty fast but even after owning my 2k2 6speed for two years now it STILL feels fast in a way even my 4.10 geared 383 el-camino never felt. Heck it even feels faster to me than my KZ1000.

So yes buy a 6 speed, automatics are for your grandmaw

I have an auto..but a 6speed is alot better. We auto's lose alot of power to the drivetrain crap. My God...whatever..thats why we chip our ecu's and do proper tunning

What no one seems to mention is the availablity of 6 speed. It will be quite a bit of work to find a clean used one.

This isn't picking cars off a shelf at a super wal mart. Ir will take a lot of work and flexability to find a clean 6 speed, especially if you are particular on options for the car. However, I wish you luck in your hunt!

I don't concern myself with the so called power loss. My car is way faster than I need it to be on a daily basis. Power isn't something that I use all the time when I'm driving. It's still there when I need it and it's not in short supply. Both of my previous Maximas and trucks were 5 speeds and I don't miss them a bit.

this is true, I have found one that's 45 miles away that I'll be checking out this weekend. fully loaded 6spd. sterling mist 1 owner and less than 12k miles a year on average and the listing price is 14.6 grand. I hope i can get a better deal on it though. what do you guys think about the price?

Describe "Fully Loaded", because a true fully loaded SE would be well worth 14.6 grand.

True Fully Loaded:
Leather, HLSD, navigation, Premium Sound system, one touch sunroof, power memory seats, heated steering wheel, auto climate control, etc.

These are EXTREMELY rare... if you can find one, I'd jump on it for that price. If you find one with everything but Nav, then you have some negotiating room, though 14k is fair depending on the condition of the car.

op already decided, however i like to say. auto is great, but controlling your gears, your power, your gas mileage is even better IMO. I get in my car everyday looking forward to drive where I am going. In an auto, i wouldn't even want to buy clear corners. haha, just my 2 cents.

and traffic doesn't phase me..... as long as there are some roads i can really enjoy my car, traffic doesn't tire me out.

check the transaxle code to see if you have HLSD...if it ends with an "H" then you have HLSD. if not, then you dont have it. the transaxle code can be found under the hood on the firewall on the driver's side.

6 speed fully loaded FTW especially if it has NAVI cus those are definitely RARE! g' luck

Sad to say I dont have a "fully loaded" 6mt...I have cloth seats but I have the titanium edition with meridian package (good for cold days). Still fun as hell and the cloth/velour seats are comfy as hell!

The code either ends with "A" or "H". "A" is for open diff, "H" is for the HLSD. It's on a shiny metal plate, can't miss it.
