Hesitaiton and PowerLoss on High Speed

i am posting this for my friend he doesnt have a maxima.org account. He has a 2001 SE MAX AUTO. PAst few days he noticed somethign strange.

" At certain speeds, like 60-80mph, when I punch the gas, the car downshifts, races up to 4K RPM only to get stuck there. The engine flattens out with absolutely no power and no movement on the tach. It does not feel like it is misfiring at all... just completely neutered."

any ideas?

he needs to get an account so we dont have to talk through you.

what SPEED does it get "stuck at"? you said it downshifts...does it then upshift?

no problems in other gears and speeds?

MAF!!! I had the same problem with my car. I bet he also had trouble first thing in the morning if he doesn't let the car warm up.
The car just hasn't thrown a code yet.

when he tries to accelerate from curising speeds of 60-80mph, he gives it some gas it downshifts and never upshifts again until he slows down enuff to start again.... this only happens at coasting at high speeds. IT accerleartes fine and everything. WHne it downshifts it rises the RPM to 4k and juss stays there and slows the car down, when he gives it more gas it doenst go past 4k.

Tell your "friend" its likely an MAF problem (Mass Air Flow Sensor) or TCM (like sooner said)

And there is PLENTY of information on this subject throughout the forum, if you take the time to look through it......

if its the MAF...then why is the tranny not upshifting when it gets to the RPMs its supposed to shift at?
why is it holding at 4K RPMs? because its waiting for an upshift

Because my auto tranny did the same exact thing when my MAF went out.......Put in a new MAF, reset the battery for 24 hours, and guess what, no more problems upshifting between 3k and 6k....

sounds like teh maf, tranny wouldnt upshift because your loosing power because of the maf and something is telling the tranny not to shift because of it, when my maf went out my car would accelerate ok till it hit 3.5 to 4k then from there to redline was very flat torque curve as if my car stopped all making any power from 3k to redline.

since i can't send you a private message, i'll do it here.

i was not post whoring, i was excited that i figured out the problem to his car. and if your going to accuse me of whoring then you should warn 90% of the people on this forum.
