Question About Belts

So I have 80k miles on my 2k1 and I think it is time to change my belts. I will be taking it in to the mechanic to do but I would like to get both of the belts from Nissan. I believe it is best to order them from Dave B correct?

I called the Dealership and got a quote for $160 to change both belts. Does anyone know how much the belts are from Dave B and how much approx should a mechanic charge to get them replaced?
Basically I just want to know if it is worth to just have the dealership do it.

The price of $160 is a typical price. I would have it done.

Be sure you buy Nissan belts. The Gates brand slip on the pulleys.

thanks1

Dave should be around there or a bit cheaper.

I spent $22 on the serpetine belt from Napa (Gates brand) and $12 for the PS belt. Spent $6.49 on a 6pack of beer.

Took about 40 minutes to do, taking my time. Pretty simple operation compared to all the other cars I've done it on. I wouldn't pay the $160 if you have the basic mechanic skills to do it.

What? I had always heard Gates is considered the best in the industry . I have used Gates belts every time, and have never had to replace one yet. Is there some discrepency with Gates belts when it comes to Nissan?

guys so do you think I should get the belts from Dave B and have a mechanic put it on, or just get it done at the dealership? Im just concerned that a private mechanic wouldn't know exactly how much to tighten it to prevent squeeling.

Up to you what you want to spend and how much you trust your mechanic. If it squeals, take it back.

Really? Come on ,If he wants to stay in business you should know how to install belts and tighten them to prevent squeeling. It is not rocket science.

cool thanks guys. Now I just need to locate Dave B's number. Also I probably need to change my air filter since the last time I did was at like 40,000 miles. Is it a good idea to go with a Nissan air filter? Also are there any pics out there to show what the air filter looks like and where it is located. I want to start learning and doing work myself Thanks guys.

You can also check on your dealers site.. See if they have coupons.

I did mines roughly 10 months ago and it was less the 100 at the dealer with the coupon. I love coupons.

Yes..there is a difference. The Nissan belt has felt on the back that grabs the pulleys better than the harder rubber used on the Gates.

My mechanic originally used Gates belts and put them on tight. Then, tightened them again 2 weeks later to get rid of the squeal. After 4 weeks, he ate the labor and replaced both with Nissan belts.

I paid the extra Nissan price for the belts and there was no charge for the labor. He has a happy customer and now knows not to use Gates for Nissan products.

thanks
