I thought the 02 has a 18 gallon tank, and FOR THE LAST TIME YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I AM CALCULATING IT CORRECT THATS NOT THE DAMN ISSUE!!
why hasnt this thread disapeared yet . . .
to the OP are u sure you calculated your mpg correctly to begin with .. 15mpg x 16.5 (filled to the brim) is roughly 250 miles per tank, whichis slightly below average... 18mpg which is more realistic x16.5 gallons comes out to roughly 300 miles per tank, also- shooting down suggestions FTMFL ,... i think its time to see a new mechanic . . .

Im not shooting nothing back in no ones face, but when someones gives me a stupid suggestion such as, trade it in, or just replace everything, wat am i supposed to say, im not looking for someone to fix my car "via keyboard" but rather someone to say, ok it sounds like this is the problem, or a MPG loss can be either this or that, I mean it can only be so many things that cause a loss in MPG, im simply desperate for someone to give me educated answers, not smartass comments like trade it in or buy a prius, or hey, just replace it like as if that should be the problem, obviously if that throttle code never came back then its NOT an issue, but u wanna tell em just replace it? cmon now, i know im annoying but jeez dont tell me useless info..
Here is my take on the torque converter....
i start my car... drive my light pressure on the gas pedal... rpms go up... say to about 1700... n drop... thats shift 1... then same thing happens again at around the 1800 rpm mark... at about 40 or 45mph on a flat road.. or max 50mph you will feel another rpm drop ... thus if you totally count you should see the rpms drop 4 times... and then driving at 50mph with light gas pedal pressure you will be at about 1700-1800 rpm and at 60 mph with light/medium gas pedal pressure you whould be at 2000 or a little more than that....
if you press the OD switch off on your transmission you will notice the od off light on the dash and then at 60mph your rpms will be higher than 2000. this is a very easy test that your torque converter is working fine.
Here is another thing you can try... find a gas station very close to an interstate exit. fill the gas tank full... now reset your trip meter... drive the car only on interstate for atleast 50-60 miles... now plan your trip in such as way that you are going 30 miles up take an exit and come back to that same gas station... fill your tank up again.. report your gas mileage... also do this interstate test after hours when you can MAINTAIN 65-70... do not exceed 70 and dont go below 60 for the entire trip.
as i mentioned before.. i have an 01 and my in city mpg is around the 15-16 mark... but my highway driving goes to about 26-28
I'll wait for your report.

Everything is in this thread already...
Re-read it with a pen and paper, make a list and start checking them off.
If you go through it all and you still get the same milage... Guess I was right.
BTW, I am NOT saying replace it all, just make sure they are working properly and some things you are better off just replacing.
IF you have questions on replacing/checking an item... SEARCH, do not post another thread! Also, go buy a Full Service Manual for your car (please don't ask where to buy one... Use your head).

FINALLY something usufuel, thanks bro, ima count the shifts next time on a flat road and see if i feel that final little drop, BTW where the hell is this OD switch? I see everyone talking about it but I have no clue where it is, turning it off will make the MPG worse correct? but at 60MPH my RPMS are always a little higher at 60MPH im usually at about 2200 rpms or 2150ish... keep in mind i have an 02 so its a different engine... i dunno if that makes a difference just figured id let u know if u didnt already lol..

na i never said everything was useless im saying alot of stuff people are saying are stupid comments and u know this urself.. yea i always gave that a thought but do u think in my year being that its IN TANK is it worth it and will i possibly see a difference or those dont usually go bad? only reason i ask this is becuz i just dont wanna replace it for no reason u know?
Yeah...we know it's in the tank. And we know you're '02 has a different motor than the '00-'01's. The fuel filter will probably be one of the less expensive replacement parts that could lead to you resolving your decreased fuel mileage. Do like upstate mentioned, and make a list and go through it. 8 pages of suggestions, you should be able to figure it out by now.

if u're doing that rpm at 60 i feel you are a little high.... but yes the motor difference maybe there... you can easily goto a dealer drive another max of same yr and confirm those numbers.. for the OD switch please read your owners manual.
try the test i mentioned tonight... from a motor perspective... i know you have a 3.5 and i have a 3.0 but we both have a 4 spd automatic with a torque converter... this means the trans would be fairly similar in the way they work and perform...
anyways... drive out tonight after about 11pm and do that little trip.. it'll probably take up over an hour if you are going to do the 60 mile trip... but it will tell u exactly what your mpg is in the semi controlled environment where you can keep a constant speed for extended time and you dont throttle up and brake frequently... remember not below 60 and not over 70... if you can use cruise that would be the best.... and fill up at the same gas station...

Thats why I told you to get a FSM... You DO NOT need other people to do this for you.
Roll up your sleaves, get under/in your car and LEARN it. Thats what I did...
Just follow the directions, it is not rocket science. Several of the people you are paying $70-90hr to work on your car have IQ's in the 80's....

No, it's huge, it would barely fit in the glove box. you don't have it, your probably thinking of the warranty supplement & service books, you can download it at phatg20.net

the FSM is what the dealership uses when working on your car so no it isnt given to every person that owns the car. the reason...most people (like you) have no business working on their car.
