Proposed Solution To Brake Squeaking...

Hey everybody... Some of you may be familiar with my situation, as I have posted about it several times... I have the hawk/brembo combo, bedded them in and they sqeal and grind like mad once they're hot with city driving.. I put that red anti-squeal gunk on the backs of the pads and they're still doing it, so i have an idea...

The last time I was applying the anti-squeal gunk, i noticed I would hear that same squeaking sound everytime the edges of the brake pad would rub against the retaining clips in the caliper.. so what I was thinking of doing was putting some electrical tape on the edges of the brake pads so there would be no metal to metal contact and thus no squeaking... what do you think... good idea? bad idea? safe idea?

VERY high heat + electrical tape = bad.

SH*T!! well what the hell can i do? this freaking squeaking is driving me crazy.. even my girl is getting annoyed by it.. i tried to re-bed the brake pads.. that didnt work.. tried to re-apply the red anti-squeal gunk and i couldnt even get the one pad out of the caliper cause it was stuck to it like super glue.. and the sound its amplified by 10x when the windows are down, which is how i like to ride.. i dont know what the hell to do...

Did the brake pads come with shims to hold them in place? If they didn't, you may be able to buy them somewhere. Most new brake pads come with shims to prevent squeaking.

I did not use any anti-squeal when I put my Hawk HPS pads on and I don't have any squealing from my brakes...

I had squealing before as well. I finally just got the new hardware kit to swap out the rusted ones i've had for more than 90k miles.

I used the gray synthetic grease this time around, the glue-like anti squeal is useless IMHO. Also put some where the pads touch the clips. No squeals since then.

see.. i tried that when i put the anti-squeal stuff on the back of my pads the second time.. but since the other brake pad was stuck to the caliper, i had a really hard time fooling around with that other pad to get it back in and get the caliper to fit back over the rotor, which pretty much rubbed off all the stuff that i put on the pad edges.... but i used the anti-squeal gunk.. not the grease.. maybe i should try that... AAARRRGGHHHH!!!! this crap is so frustrating... where did you get it... auto zone or somewhere?

I think as long as you have a little bit of the grease on there, it'll work. The first time around i put too much and it just went on the rotors. So i cleaned it all up again and re-applied barely a dab onto the clips where the pads mount.

The glue-like anti-squeal stuff never worked for more than a few miles for me. I also had a hard time cleaning it out. After i used the grease, everything has been so much better. I got it at Autozone. It's a small can with a shiny silver cover that has the applicator brush built in.

sometimes just cleaning the brakes eliminates the squealing, either by spraying water directly on the area or using brake cleaner. the brakes on my m3 squeal real bad if i dont clean them periodically. i have found this to be common with more agressive pads.

I used a screwdriver to get in between and pried them off, just be careful with it and do it one small step at a time.

I can tell some of you guys aren't using a wirebrush to clean all the contact points on the caliper. Are you just dissasembling, blasting them with bc, and applying anti-squeak? because your supposed to clean the calipers up real good with a wirebrush (coarse sandpaper will do)

1. Clean brake hardware with wire brush
2. Take slider pins out and clean
3. Apply a small amount of slyglyde to hardware and slider pins
4. Clean rotors with brake clean
5. Use anti squeek on back of pads.

1-5 = no brake noise

followed same sequence while installing new rotors and pads on my brothers maxima so far had no noise issues.

i got them from pep boys.. the front ones came in the box un-wrapped with the plastic like the back ones were, which kind of concerned me.. i shouldve asked for another pair of front brakes that were wrapped up in plastic

yeah that sounds like a plan.. i didnt know i needed to clean the brakes with a wire brush... do i clean the whole caliper with the wire brush? and what kind of solution should i use?

just clean the insides of the caliper at any contact point and the hardware with the wirebrush and then hit them with brake cleaner afterwards
