Thinking about an uprade...

Hey everybody. I have a 2001 auto max with a stillen intake and a cattman y-pipe... however, i want some more power, and i'm thinking about upgrading to those OBX headers off of ebay... is it worth it? i'll tell you the things i'm looking for: more power, not a whole lot of noise, no fitment issues... are OBX headers a good choice considering those things? or should i just stick with my y-pipe...

p.s... incase you're wondering why i didn't just go with these headers in the first place its because i didn't know that they were out there at that price

headers are usually about the best gain for the monies, but if noise is a concern; forget it. people are posting gains of about 10-12hp on those intake spacers that come out. those might be your best bet as there's no real noise increase. If you're dead-set on headers though, try the classified section or ***** ebay for some hotshots or cattmans.

Intake spacer will do almost nothing for an 00-01 with a 3.0... We have a composite intake, not a metal one like the 3.5 so we don't have the same heat problems.

To the OP- your best bet is to make sure your VIAS still works, if it is broken fix it with JB weld... Thats a free 30hp right back at ya... Also check your AFR and see if a AFC can hep you at all.

please research before posting answers.

headers and intake manifold spacers give "best gains" on a 3.5. neither do much for a 3.0.

Headers offer the best gains for a 3.0 also, just not as much bang for the buck.

the y-pipe is the best bang for the buck on a 3.0.
adding headers doesnt add much more (for the money and install time)

Seems that you s are both correct, it just comes down to a matter of personal opinion/ability/resources.

Anyways, the OBX manifolds are actually decently designed; they are long tube headers, but the y-pipe collector isn't equal length. They'd probably flow better than the SS Auto Chrome/Stone Mountain/Stillen, but not as good as the Hotshots and Cattmans.

you can't really "test" easily. But it is probably broken like everyone else's. Take it apart and check to see if the "cup" is loose/seperated from the VIAS shaft. I think there's a writeup in the stickies/how-tos.

Hey fellas, I recently installed a set of those Ebay 2001 OBX headers on my 5 speed maxima. Firstly, you will have fitment issues from the front manifold to y-pipe/second manifold (two piece combo). My friend heated and bent my piece about 35-40 degrees to the left (the left meaning toward the driver side door). It took us two days to complete the install because my buddy had to bring the piece to his job. Finally, there were several leaks: one from the front manifold (passenger side), one from the high flow connection to the y-pipe/second manifold (damn gaskets), and one in the rear from the Greddy b-pipe to the Greddy muffler (another damn gasket!).

To stop the leaks, I bought three tubes of that muffler cement from Pep Boys, and I covered all the connections (front manifold, rear manifiold, pipes, etc) to stop any leaks. That cleared up any tractor sounds that I had. Let me tell you, too, the sound is amazing once all the issues are fixed. Of course, this is preference for each driver, but I just love the rumble the engine makes when I hit WOT or punch it a 'lil. The car actually gets a lot of looks now. My friend who drives a 350Z had to admit that my car sounded better than his.

Oh, another problem you will need to overcome with installation is the location of the O2 sensors. You will need to lengthen the wires (which I did) or buy those simulator pieces. I will post pictures of what I have done, and once I buy this digital camera, I will post videos with sound on youtube, so people can critque and review.

As for gains, I am sure my Maxima has made some considerable gains. I have a Berk Intake, OBX headers/ypipe combo, high flow cat, and Greddy Evo2 exhaust.

Video clip (done using my cell phone) OBX headers on 2001 Max

Here is a clip of my Maxima with the OBX Headers, High Flow Cat, and Greddy EVO2. I also have a Berk Intake set up.

Until I see number for the OBX, I wouldn't touch it on a 3.0. Waste of money and hassle IMO.

Thanks, Rainbow Brit...Stardust. Sound is a preference. Also, I took the clips with my cell phone (not the best microphone).

Anyway, for some people who want another clip to hear and review the OBX Headers, here is a distance clip:
I posted these on a couple of other header threads. Are there any compilation ones I can post these to, so that people have comparative resources (like a Cattman sound clip)?

that's what i plan on getting.. intake, headers, and stock catback.. do headers increase the noise level a whole lot above the sound of an intake and a stock catback?

According to my butt dyno. The Cattman headers are A BIG gain compared to my Cattman y-pipe.

And I have a 3.0 - After SSIM, I went up to 200whp as opposed to my friend's 5-speed 2001 178whp with working VIAS.
