Is it "preferred" to use geniune Nissan fluids when doing maintenance that requires them like the ATF, brake and power steering fluid or is using other companies like Valvoline and Mobil 1 just as good? Nissan is recommending me to get a power steering flush, and costs $150, while Pep Boys and other similiar places including Autozone will do it for $50 yet they use Valvoline SYN Power Power steering...curious to what some of you guys do or use when changing fluids.

 

I used Amsoil ATF for my tranny and power steering, and Mobil 1 for oil, which will be changed to German Castrol. Brake I use Valvoline Synpower DOT3/4.

 

Nissan oem fluids probably are "preferred", but your owners manual will also list perfectly acceptable alternative fluids...like Dextron III rather than Nissan ATF. The only Nissan branded fluid I use is their coolant as no aftermarket alternative just like it is available.

I used a quart of Mobil 1 ATF ($6 at the time) to replace all the power steering fluid in my 01 maxima, and did the job myself in the garage.

 

doing a flush and refil is very easy on your own.
also so called 'generic fluids' are just fine from my experience and many others. nissans fluids arn't magical. same with oil. ya moble 1 is nice but if you change your oil every 3-4k with the cheap stuff it doesn't matter what you use. likewise with an oil filter.

and for what it's worth i SERIOUSLY doubt you need a PS flush.

think about what's happening to the power steering fluid. the pressure and temperatures its being subjected to.. youre saying you should never change it?

afaik ps pumps are not known to go bad on our cars. so changing the fluid religiously like some other cars is not needed.
thus unless the fluid was really brown colored i wouldn't think twice about it. i'm sure his is translucent just as mine is.
having it done based on miles or age doesn't make sense..it doesn't go bad or brake down afaik it gets dirty and the dirt and grim mess up the PS pump causing it to fail. But i think our pump has a filter on it ontop of the fact it's not a known problematic occurance.
which is why i said i doubt he SERIOUSLY needs to do a flush and refill. because he never talked about it's condition.. only that a stealership said he should have it done. which means nothing comming from them.
why don't you tell me why you think i don't know what i'm talking about? instead of making a blanketed statement.

 

Ok, ALL fluid needs to be changed. There is NO such thing as a lifetime fluid.

 

Changing fluids is one thing, but all those fancy powerflush extras that service stations try to tack-on have not been shown to have any benefit.

Thanks for the advice. My PS fluid is a little brown, so I went ahead and changed it myself...! After some searching, found out the turkey baster method and bought some Mobil 1 Syn ATF. I might have to do it like maybe two more times to get all of the old fluid out. Quite simply the easiet thing I ever done other than changing the oil, and only spent no more than $10 which saved me from spending $150.

 

No aftermarket but Honda and Toyota coolant work just as well.
