Broke caliper bracket bolt-how to get it out?!
I gotta problem. Changing rear brakes, put a bar on the passenger side caliper bracket bolt and it came right off
Went and got a bolt extractor but my drill wont touch it, put a 1/4 inch bit @ 1200 rpm and it barely scratches the surface of the bolt. How do I get this thing out?
btw sorry about pic size, but see the little dip in the bolt? Thats AFTER drilling!
A carbide/cobalt bit and a drill press..that should get that sucker out.
Might want to start with a smaller bit and go with a bigger bit next (titanium tipped/carbide/cobalt) since those bolts are hardened metal. Good luck on getting it out.
OT: We drill a lot of hardened metals where I work. You should see what a cobalt bits do to the metal. Like hot knife through butter!

Have a nut welded onto the broken piece and take it out with a socket. I don't think you can buy that part without the whole caliper.

Thanks for the replies, I can get it through parts stores, autozone and advance have it but they'd have to order it. its like 20 bucks FYI in case someone needs one.
anyway, I got a decent sized hole by using a #3 high speed steel center drill then 3/16" bit. my bolt extractor is high carbon steel which means its brittle, its also cobalt but it broke too lol i'm probly gonna take it to a shop tomorrow and have them get it out

took it to a garage, none of their bolt extractors worked...those guys ended up having to drill completly through the bolt, heat it up over and over again and keep drilling to get the bolt pieces out then re-tap the whole, came to 50 bucks
A similar thing happened to me with the caliper pin, but then I used a drill bit to nudge the broken bolt from the hole, fortunately it worked for me. The local dealer was charging me $40 for the caliper pin, I was shocked.
But then when I had to get the bolt itself, I fell to the ground, $6.50/bolt. Pretty shocking, these Japanese bolts are metric with a different thread count. You cannot find one American made metric bolt that would go into the pin.
Just wanted to let out my story.
