What part is this?

On the intake...something to do with the breather system? Can it cause harm or an SES because I took it off?

Its got a bigger hose, and 2 small ones connected to it

That's for your vacuum lines ( I think), you probably want to leave that on because you want that air filtered before it is drawn into the engine. If you're putting on an intake, it will have appropriate hook-ups for it, but I would leave it on for now. I wouldnt even want to know what would happen it you got a dry leaf in there or something lol

Leaving it on will keep your low end around when you get an A/M intake....

I just tried taking it off for sound purposes, I have a WAI if you can even call it that, just a cone filter at the end of that box.

A kid where I worked (autozone) has a cone filter on his 02 saturn SL2 v6, it goes filter right to IM...sounds sick. Really, I'd get a sound clip if I could, its got a real deep growl to it, all my car did was whistle when I put it on, however without this box i have *close* to the same sound so I might put a foam filter on those hoses and keep it off as long as it doesnt throw a code

That is because that is the intake resonator. Its job is to reduce the sound of the intake air. Where did you hook your vacuum line to with this removed?

I thought it was a resonator. It's still hooked up, just in the engine bay with foam on the ends of it, its not in line with the air filter anymore.

At the end of what box? Did you remove the factory airbox and OEM filter or leave it and just put another filter on the end where there is a rectangular opening?

If you've got a dig-cam, please take pics and post. I'd love to see this.

I'm guessing the larger hose if from the VC, 2 smaller ones are from the IACV area?

Well I haven't driven anywhere far yet, I wanted to see if it made any difference w/out disconnecting any hoses so just put foam filter material on the hole so **** wouldnt get sucked in.

And yes I've heard of Hemholtz resonators before, probably on here I think but thanks for clarifying

Why would I put a filter on the rectangular opening? it's just a crappy WAI I'm sure you've seen one before.. took out the stock airbox and "ram air" and put a filter with an MAF adapter going into the resonator. Now, that was taken out and it goes right to the rubber flex hose into the TB.

I am pretty sure you need to have those vacuum lines connected to a working intake so that a vacuum is created to aid in Idle Air Control and EGR recirculation. I believe many have done what you have done but leave the resonator inline.
