Shifting automagik...
How do you properlly manually shift the automagik? I've heard that you're supposed to do it to get faster times for the car, but the only way I can think is, let off gas, shift, step on gas, and that seems so slow. Should I be flooring it the entire time? That seems like it would absolutely kill the tranny. Cuz even my way it doesn't seem to shift real smooth or quick, just jerky like. And if you are supposed to floor it, how much time would it actually save compared to just flooring it?
The auto tranny shifts too early so manually shifting will get you better times if you do it correctly. Releasing the gas during the shift is not necessary. Just floor it and when you see the revs approaching 6k, shift up. The tranny will shift at 6300 or 6400 if you shift up around 6k. Practice...
Start out with the shifter in "1" and then just keep your right foot buried. As the tach needle swings past 6000rpm, upshift to 2nd gear - the delay from moving the shifter to when the actual shift takes place will be such that the shift should occur right at redline and hopefully before you start bangning off of the rev limiter.
Do the same thing for 2nd and even 3rd (OD off) if you're going all out.
...but always keep your right foot buried!!
This will defeat that crappy 5900rpm shift point and unleash the true power of the automagics!

How bad will it be on the tranny keeping it floored the whole time? As bad as say, true powershifting a stick? or worse? I don't mind a lil damage but this car has to last me 7-8 years for a good 100-150k miles. And for shifting, put it in 1, bury the accelerator, reach 6k rpm, push the button and move shifter to 2nd, shift at 6300, rinse, lather, and repeat...
do i push the button or just push the whole thing forward?
Sorry I'm a dummy...never manually shifted an automagik...and this car si too ncie for me to want to kill it...
BTW, how much time would i save with this technique?

You can and should have your foot on the accelerator when shifting for the best times. The shifts are still electronically controlled by the TCM so there is no damage. I have to shift mine at 6,100rpms to override the programmed shifts and then the computer will take 450rpm's to decide to shift at 6,550rpms, right before the fuel-cutoff. I've heard that others shift theirs at 6,000rpms? Mine will shift right at 6,000rpms if I move the shifter at that rpm. Try either way and see what works for you.
BTW: First gear is too tall! Comm'n, 47mph(max) in first gear? BLAH!

you do not have to push the button to go from 1 to 2 to D to N...the only time you have to push the button is to get from park to reverse, or from D down to 1 or 2
just have it in 1 sitting at a stoplight with overdrive off and floor it...move the shifter upto the 2 position at around 6100 rpms (after a few trys you will learn your shift point but the best place is to shift at redline)...keep the pedal down the entire time...since it is an automatic, shifting like this is just like leaving it in drive and letting it shift itself...no pain to the tranny (unless you bounce it off redline)...so just keep it floored and shift about 400-500rpm below redline...we get most of our power way way up high...after 2nd gear, at redline (around 75mph) hit it into D and if you take that upto its top end (about 112mph) hit the OD button to turn OD back on

I don't think I have tcs....on a 2k1 GXE? Anyway, thanks everyone for answering. So, I don't have to push the button on the shifter from 1-2, but what about 2-D? And is leaving OD off really that big of a deal?

No, you don't need to push the button from 2 => D either. Leaving OD off will only lock out 4th gear. It won't make you any faster. But if you race, you should turn it off so you don't go into OD. 3rd gear ends around 115, 120 mph....

yeah, the GXE doesn't have TCS, only the SE and GLE automagicsleaving OD off keeps the car in 3rd gear when shifting from 2->D ...then, by pressing the OD button near redline in 3rd will allow the car to shift into 4th
from 1->2->D you don't have to push the shift button, just move the lever up each time (and don't worry, you can't push it from D->R without pressing the shift button)
cheers
Ok, thanks everybody. As soon as my break in is done I'm gonna start whooping some ***. And i'm taking all of your guys word for it, so if my tranny craps out you guys are buying me a new one, level 10 maybe...
Bouncing off of redline? From this thread, you're saying that there is a rev limiter? So I can't blow my engine even if I tried?
I've tried powershifting, but never that close to redline. There is always that 1 or 2 second delay in my shift so I never tried it in fear I might go over redline.
About what speeds do you shift for each gear?

Try a 1st gear downshift at 35mph. Tire squealing fun

Your car looks sick! How many inches did you lower it?. I love it.

If you let off the gas when you hit the rev limiter, its very harsh, but if you still have your foot on the gas, you'll just feel a slight loss of power because the fuel is cut off. I shift at 40-41mph 1-2 and it will shift 47-48mph@redline. 76-77mph 2-3@redline and I'm I didn't keep track of the other gears. To answer the other questions of the post, you can't really "power" shift an electronically controlled automatic transmission. The computer in the transmission itself will shift like in normal "D" which means it will slip the torque converter, cut fuel, shift, and slip the torque converter again. You don't have to push in the button to do 1-2-D upshifts, only on downshifts. Its a saftey feature so you don't accidentally hit it into 2nd gear at 80mph

and if you try to downshift to 2nd while going 100mph, the engine won't downshift, but when you get to speeds in the 2nd gear range, it will downshift and use engine braking to slow down...i've downshifted to 1st at 35 and have never had my tires squeal...you just feel the 2-1 downshift much more than you feel any other downshift (since you are really never suppossed to downshift to 1) unless fully stopped
umm
sorie to ask this cause this aint my section but does this work for my 4th gen. 96 gle. just wondering. when i shift its first gear to 20mph.2nd to 40mph.then d to when ever. can i go higher or willl this kill my engine. is this shift techqniue only for u 5th gens? thanks B
