new "gearbox" quote
Hey, my friend has a 2000 maxima se 5speed and he broke down the other day (with about 90-100k miles). He said he couldn't shift into first or second so he couldn't get going. I don't know the exact details though. Anyhow, he went to a garage and was quoted 2095$ for a new "gearbox", labor included. Does this sound correct as the part and quote? I'm just trying to get an idea for him on what he's dealing with. Thanks.
Transmissions can be expensive. Were they going to replace the transmission, or do some work on the current one? If they are going to replace it, he might be better off buying the transmission elsewhere and taking it to them to save some money.
It almost sounds like his problem could be a clutch issue. I ran into a similar problem when my input bearing went and some transmissions fluid leaked on the clutch. I could get in 3-5, but it was like 1-2 were not even there. (EDIT: This was in my Sentra).

I would get a 2nd opinion. That is way too much for tranny work. To R is prolly 3-4 hundo.
hmm apparently theyre replacing the gearbox, not the entire tranny... I told him I would see what people had to say on the forum, but I just found out he already gave the ok (he's not one to look through his options) so thats 2095$ to replace a the gearbox including labor. It's at a descent garage too, I know they have a good rep. Why wouldn't you just replace the entire tranny, couldn't you do it for about the same price if you bought it threw a good source? I really don't know much about pricing or what's involved here, I tend to stay away from tranny's, so sorry for my ignorance.

What exactly do you mean by the 'gearbox'? A manual trans is pretty much just two shafts, a bunch of gears, and a diff (well, manual transaxle, anyway). Have they even diagnosed the issue, or are they recommending replacement as a first option?
