CF Hood Incident..
CF Hood Incident..
I was working under the hood on my car this morning and i had my hood prop for my VIS carbon fiber hood, a gush of wind came and knocked my hood against my windshield. My windshield didnt crack but my carbon fiber chipped on both sides of the hood, 1 of the pieces broke off.. It sucks, especially because i was just finished with what i was doing! i tired crazy glue but it seems still a bit flimsy.. here are some pics...

Carbon Fiber is an anisotropic substance. It does not possess the same physical properties in all directions. Therefore, the strength of a carbon fiber part depends completely on how the part was made. You can either do a unidirectional lay up where the grain points in the same direction or you can do a weave where you have grain pointing in 2 or more directions.
The pics are not good, but on the surface it looks like the grain is pointing in one direction only. The impact with the hood could have generated force in a direction where the hood is weak, thus bending it.
You can use epoxy designed for composite materials to glue the part of the hood back together, but there is no guarentee it will be as strong or look as good as it did from the factory.

strong things do break, especially when they are subjected to enormous forces. Its the weight of the hood throw backwards on two little edges... of course its going to break!
As for repair, might try if a body shop can repair it with clear coat once you manage to epoxy the layers together again.

Carbon Fiber is extraordinarily strong for it's weight. Doesn't mean it's strong in the same sense steel is. one of the big deals about CF is that it's light. To make up for that, It's quite brittle. You ever get into a situation where the hood gets hit hard, It'll shatter. You're quite lucky. Do the recommended epoxy application and maybe use a black or darkest gray matte paint on the crack. then have that shop clear-coat it. should hide it pretty well. The worst part to this sort of thing is that you'll always know it's there, and that will bug you more than anyone scoping out your ride.
