This happened earlier tonight, a friend of mine just recently got a 1998 Maxima SE w/5spd. All he's been doing is telling me how he could beat my car and how I should have gotten a 5spd instead of an automatic. So finally after getting tired of listening to him talk crap, I challenged him to a race. We raced 2 times, both times he got a jump on me at the start. I would fall back to where my front bumper was right with his rear quarter panel, then at around 50mph or so my car would come back on him and by the time we would hit around 85mph or 90mph, I would win by 1 or 1 1/2 car lengths. The last time we raced he shifted out of third to early and then because I was already ahead he gave up. But, all in all I'm satisfied with my cars performance. So go ahead and put down a check in the win column for the automagic's

It definately was your lucky day, because no stock 2k/2k1 or 4th gen auto can beat a 4th or 5th gen 5spd if the driver is a good driver. Its been proven and all the stats in the mags. prove it!

If you were 1- 1- 1/2 car lengths ahead by 85 or 90, then you're saying an 5th gen automatic can beat a 4th gen 5 speed in the quarter. I guess it CAN happen due to certain variables (condition of his car, his shifting techniques, how much gas in each car, etc..). Most of the times I've seen for the 5th gen auto were mid-high 15's in the mags.
This goes to show how street racing can vary from published numbers. Good win anyway.

Where you manually shifting your auto?

...so that means that the automatic is sucking up around 32hp right? (since the 98 has 190 and the 01 has 222)
I think that is pretty bad...

Well, actually if you assume 15% driveline loss for 4th gen 5spd, that comes to 162 fwhp. And for a 5th gen auto the loss is 20-25%, that comes to 167-178 fwhp. Now, of course you can't assume then that the auto would be faster because you need to know the gear ratios and curb weights, but it seems like it should be close...

Keep in mind that your magazine times are for cars that are driven by experts, not your average Joe. While there are clearly some very good drivers around here, most people wouldn't be able to touch what those experts can do with the car. Many people (in particular Si drivers) claim to be the shiznit when it comes to driving and shifting, but don't realize just how much skill can be involved in driving a stick. That's why as far as street racing goes, the mag's times don't mean jack when the two cars are closely matched. A little difficiency in driver skill can go a long way. They would have been close if his friend was driving damn near perfectly, and the chances of that are pretty slim (no offense to your friend).

I agree 100%

Too many people are living in Magazine world (a lot of times are buttered up by some car manufacturers marketing budgets as well). Also it is very hard to drive a manual car perfectly everytime especially with varying road conditions. Bottomline there is nothing better than a real life experience such as this one and a recent M3 run by Flipmode_Cali as well. Most non believers either have slow cars or don't know how to driver their car to the "Max".

Well you are correct about the Mags, but I currently own both gens. and my 4th auto is slightly quicker than my 5th. A friend of mine and I did 4 runs on 190 in Dallas and my 97 auto took a 1 car lead initially and up to 90 the 2k1 auto was gained but was still behind my front door on 4 different runs. So his car wasnt isnt in good shape, or the driver was poor.
