Odd stereo problem

Hey all,

Have a strange problem with my base 2000 GXE maxima, with the base stereo system. About 6 months ago, my left side speakers went out, but from time to time would come back on for a little while.

While driving the other day, I hit a bump, and the right side speakers went out. Now I have a stereo Head unit that seems to work fine, but no sound??

I am assuming it is a short of some kind, but I have been looking around and cant seem to find the issue (then again I dont know what I am doing)>

Any ideas of what caused this, and how to fix? I am pretty handy but wouldnt consider myself an electrician.
Any help would be appreciated. I cant stand driving around in silence
Thanks
Frank

Common issue with the Bose head units. Some try to replace it under warranty, but end up with just another unit that cuts out. In your situation you're probably better off buying an aftermarket HU and wiring it into your Bose system. Audio forum has plenty of info. If the shop says it can't be done, they're idiots.

Pull your door panels and try a differnet speaker (it can even be a computer speaker, just don't turn it up) and see if that fixes the problem. Also you can try hooking up the speaker to your home stereo. Again don't turn it up.

If it does then it is your speakers, if it does not them it is wiring (doubt it) or the head unit.
My bet is that it is the speakers.

I don't think it is a Bose.

I read 'base' as Bose. My question to the OP - is it a double din HU or a single din? I've seen this happen with the non-Bose double din's. And the single din units are rare so if it's happened, there isn't much presence.

Yes it is the base system, but I am unsure what din means? It is the base HU with a cd and tape input. Do you think it still is the speakers? Do the BASE models have unique issues like this?
I assume it is not the speakers as sound will come on from time to time. Is there a weak spot where shorts occur?

Again try what I said to find out. It is quick and easy way to do it. If not some sterio shop might screw you and tell you need everything to be replaced. Just to make a buck off of you.

It's to late and I'm to lazy in general to find the link this second but if you do a search in this forum you'll find a link that will walk you threw opening your head unit and rectifying the problem. It's very detailed and almost impossible to mess up. Beyond that they say the fix last between 1-2 years so if you don't want to bother with the headache do what they say and buy an aftermarket. So basically there's nothing wrong with your left speaker it's all in your head unit. Good Luck

DIN is the size of the unit. Is the height of it approximately 2 inches tall or does it span from the vents all the way down to the climate control? if its 2 inches its a single din. if it spans all the way down its a double din. Again, I HIGHLY doubt it is the speakers.

Yes, it is a double DIN then. Sounds like I have two things to look at-Pulling off the door panel to test the speakers

and, do the HU fix. Does anyone have a link to this thread?? I cant seem to get search to work??

You have to donate to be able to search. It is onlt $20 and well worth the vast information that you will get from the org.

Does this fix apply to the BASIC BASE HU, or the upgraded BOSE HU unit? I just have the standard stereo.....

Aw crap my bad I assumed you had the 6 disc. I'm still sure if you do a search you can find the answers to most problems you have.

What ended up being the problem? I have a 2000 base unit double din with only my tweeters working.
