Custom mandrel-bent rear section? Anyone done it?

I currently own a FC rear section and I'm looking for other options that allow for greater flow at high RPM. I have pretty much decided on a Magnaflow 14815/14816 http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...ne=main&id=386
My problem is, I do not have a local shop that has a mandrel bender and I was thinking about buying some of these pre-mandrel bent tubes http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/02smooth.asp and having a local shop weld them for me.

I wanted to know if anyone on the org has done this and if so what specifically did they use. I've also thought about buying a cheap-o ebay rear section that is mandrel bent, cutting the cheap muffler off and welding in a magnaflow. This may be more $$ though. I know cattman is always an option and I already have cattman b, but I like the look/quality of the magnaflow muffler. Any thoughts, comments, criticisms and concerns would be great. Thanks

Please don't buy Magnaflow. They are the ****tiest mufflers I have ever heard in my life.

A lot of people like the sound of magnaflow (I'm not one of them BTW) but they sound terrible on anything but a v8 I feel.

Also there are mandrel bend sections on ebay that are going for 10$ each. Most likely thats a lot cheaper than what magnaflow is offering. You can also get alminized or stainless steel. I am putting together a true dual 3 in exhaust all the way from the headers back this way for about 300$ installed.

I was planning on getting any mandrel bent tubing and def not what was on the magnaflow site. I just wasnt exactly sure what I was going to need.
You think magnaflow sounds bad on this ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS1Nnd1Wq6s
Granted it is a Z just I like it. I have heard a few CL acuras with magnaflow setups that I have really liked. Any other options for a muffler that is straight through and stainless, not ricey looking.

i had a magnaflow on mine and it sounded great, just on the loud side very throaty. if i wanted my car loud and if i had a stick i would have kept that. very clean looking and they are of very high quality. if the frankencar is a center inlet why dont you just cut that right before the muffler and then install the magnaflow keep the frankencar madrel piping.

I explored this option some time back and even bought a cheap G35 Sedan muffler to experiment with but couldn't find a local place that did mandrel bending or anything off the internet that would help or that was within my budget. I agree that those two Magnaflows do look nice, but exhaust tone is all personal preference and I was concerned about how the muffler would look on a Maxima; ie. if it would stick out too far, look too big, etc. I just ended up sticking with my Frankencar.

I'm considering doing that but I like the idea of just being able to bolt on the FC if I dont like the Magnaflow right off the bat. I do not have my OEM rear section anymore.

It's been proven that the stock cat-back seems to flow well up to ~ 250fwhp.

Well I spoke with a tech over at warpspeed today about possibly welding up a custom magnaflow rear section and he was pretty firm on suggesting other options. He told me they haven't been able to find anything that suits the 3.5L maximas at all. This info was a little disappointing but coming from them it means something because they have had this setup on a 3.5L max and thought it was entirely too loud. I knew the magnaflow would be loud however I didn't expect it to be TOOO loud. I did however run across this http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=521715
which is interesting. They are unfortunately pricey but maybe I could just sell my FC and put up a small amount of money. I saw these a while back and forgot about them. Anyway just another idea to float around.

Thanks for trolling, keep the thread on topic, it IS the 5gen forum, you know that right?

Back on topic,
Hasn't anyone heard what I stated in my earlier post?

No one listens to sound advice in the 5g forum anymore. You should know this by now. i.e. "5th gen w/underglow"

a buddy of mine has an AE edition auto with a magnaflow, sounds nice while cruising at low speed. I haven't heard it on the highway though.

But is that his only change? The stock cats and resonators probably tone it done quite a bit if that is the case. I have an aftermarket cat, no precats and cattman b-pipe so I'm guessing it is going to be too loud for me. I still don't know I have a competent rear section now and I don't need to change it immediately I'm just trying to research a bit before I make my decision.

Nmex, AFAIK you and derrick2k2se are the only guys with mods and tunes that have kept the stock rear section and you both made good #s. It is a well designed piece for OE but it is manufactured with stress bends and 2 1/4" where the rest of my exhaust is 2.5", so naturally I would want to finish it off with a 2.5" mandrel bent rear section. The remus mufflers actually have a valve in them similar to our stock setup, so maybe that is why they do a better job at muffling the sound as well as good flow high in the rev range.

Trolling...kiss my @$$.. The only one trolling was the guy putting his opinion where it doesnt belong on whats a waste on my car. I was actually helping the OP find some cheaper mandrel bends and let him know many others have done what hes suggesting... so back off

yea thats going to be loud alright, i had a magnaflow + Y + B pipe w/o resonator. Hated it from the day i put it on, i couldnt wait to get rid of it. I do a lot of highway driving and the droning at h/w speed drove me crazy.

Roy what do you have now? I was looking on Flowmasters website and they have a 60 series muffler that is made for imports however it is 2.25" http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/60_series.html
Anyone have experience with a dynomax or borla?
The magnaflow, which I am leaning way away from is also 2.25" but I have been told they can be "stepped out" to 2.5" fairly easily by an exhaust shop. Just a thought.

After about 6 mo w/ the magnaflow i got fed up w/ the noise and picked up a OEM style after market rear section from ebay for like $100. At that point i realy dint care what was back there as long as it quieted things down for me to nice level.
A Y-pipe + B-pipe w/o resonator (+intake) makes the car loud enough for me, good growl on heavy acceleration and pretty quiet otherwise. freeflowing mufflers are all just to loud, the droning drives me crazy. I have had a few different mufflers attached to the Y + B pipes, I cant feel a bit of difference in performance between a free flowing like the magnaflow and the baffled replacment rear section i have on now.
