Question on Front Struts

Ive got 145,000 on my 2000 SE and never replaced the struts. I now realize they are worn out. What do I need to replace them with?? The key word here is NEED because Im not sure how long Ill have the car and dont want to spend a fortune on expensive factory units (dealer quoted me $225.00 each w/o uinstallation).

Will a pair of Monroe Sense-O-Matic units work?? They cost about $100.00 a piece.

Go to a parts store, aka auto zone or advance auto parts, I got my struts there for $201 for the pair. I installed them in the parking lot in like 2 hours, all you need is a spring compressor, a electric impact drill for the top nut or air gun, a breaker bar for the 2 bolts on the lower strut and like a 10 or 12 mm socket for the top 3 that hold the strut mount it, just take out the 2 bottom ones, take off the brake line connected to the strut and abs wire, remove the 3 top bolts and the whole assembly will come out, compress the spring with a GOOD spring compressor , remove the center nut on top, remove the spring from the strut, slap in the new one, line up the spring seats, tighten top nut, reinstall, there is no camber adjustment so you shouldent have to get a alignment. Unless you have lowering springs etc.

Ok, then the Monroe's it is. They're so bad, they're rattling around. Im putting on new tires at the same time, so i cant wait to drive it after its all done. Should feel like a different car.

Im not investing too much money in this car because I may get rid of it in a few months or I may keep it for anothe couple of years. The guy in the parts departrment at the Nissan dealer said I should get another 145k ouot of this thing. Which Ive heard several times before.

You still need an alignment when replacing struts.
