Need BETTER Brakes!!!
Ok I'm starting to really get sick of the stock brakes on my maxima. I'm in need of some serious braking power but I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for them. Any suggestions and/or experience with upgraded brake systems on our 5th Gen maximas? I know Y2KevSE is running the 300 ZX TT brake calipers with slotted rotors and was curious as to what this setup costs. After one or two hard braking runs my brakes make this horrible sound (kind of warble) due to being so hot! And yes I have had the rotors turned already once under warranty by Nissan. If they could talk they would probably be saying, "Damn D-Man you're burning me up with that SCer!!" Any comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Yeah...
Me to! I don't have the SC (future, but for now just a dream) and have priced the Stillen, and Brembo and for around 2K you can get yourself a kit.
But hearing Y2KevSE and company getting the TT on, thats what I would like to do. I have emailed his cohort, but being on the west coast and me in Ohio it does not look to promising.
Let us know guys!

No need to do a full brake job. Just get some AXXIS Metal Master pads, or Portfield I think there called. Change the brake fluid to MOTUL 600, and get some SS lines. Your brakes will be awesome guranteed after you do this.

Re: Yeah...
FYI: heard TT brakes doesnt fit with the stock 17" rims.

He thinks the Skyline brake calipers and rotors may fit on my car for an approx cost of $1000.

brake suggestions
just my 02 cents on how to easily improve the brakes most effectively at a very reasonable cost for street driving:
- remove the dust shields from behind the rotors (frt and rr); they prevent air from flowing thru the rotor (the only thing that really cools the brakes)and better cools the inner side of the rotor
- replace all pads with porterfield r4-s pads
- replace fluid with either ATE or Castrol GTX fluid (have the highest boiling points of easily accessable fluids)
- if you dont care about your fog lights, remove and make the round hole into a brake cooling hole for a 3" hose and aim it directly toward the center of the rotor (porterfield sells the hose)
that's it; with these mods, you will have much better brakes with a better initial bite, and they will take longer to heat up
slotted rotors? waste of money; they dont do what the marketing says they do. they were devised by road racers in the early 80's to solve the problem of standard street pads from venting gasses for most of their life. pads such as the porterfield r4-s only vent gas during their break-in period, which lasts about 15 minuites if done correctly. slottted/drilled rotors actually reduce effective brake force under extreme conditions, plus shortens their lifespan.

PS- If you're looking for Stillen Big Brake kit, email me.
Thanks for the info. I'll trade brake dust for warped rotors any day!

It's regular brake fluid for racing. You can buy it at a kuwaski dealer, I can't spell that sorry. heheheh. 7 bucks for a big bottle.

Re: brake suggestions
Use Motul 600, the best fluid there is for boiling point, its Dot 4 approved. AutoX guys use it and road racing alot, because it won't fade.

actually that is only partially true. cross drilled rotors are mainly for outgassing of brake pads, which isn't related to cooling of the brakes. for the most part, cross-drilled do not perform any better than a normal vented rotor unless you are really pushing your car on the track.
The Z brakes will definitely help... trust me.
I have not experienced fade under high speed braking. The initial bite on the brakes are very good, but you do have to press down a bit further because it stops.
The whole setup was about $500 and it included 2 calipers, 2 caliper rebuild kits, 2 slotted rotors, and SS lines.

So explain the kit further....You only put new calipers on the front? Or did you get two kits? One for the front and one for the back. I seem to recall seeing black Nissan calipers on all corners, but could be wrong. Would getting a "kit" be better in my interest or just a waste (large) of money?
Hmmmmm...... I press down about 1-1.5(?) inches further. That's an approximation because I've never measured. I actually had to press down further while on my stock brakes during the last few weeks on their existence.
Yup, the kit is just for the fronts (4 pistons each caliper). The rear Z brakes (Skyline also) will not fit. I'm not sure what you mean by "kit". Do you mean Stillen's Big Brake Kit? It's quite expensive, but if you can get it at a fair price make sure you jump on it. I think the Wilwood kit is a good price when Shing was holding the group deal.

I think the What's up with you guys on brakes,my 2000 has good brakes.you should't be braking so much, just holding down the gas.Well maybe you have a damn auto or something.

When you have lightning fast modified maximas like ours they require much better brakes to bring us down from our warp speeds. Yeah we may have a damn autos but I promise you'll only see our taillights if you come up against me or Kevin. Later.
