I just bought a 2001 Infiniti I30 (basically same as Maxima). I want to start doing mods; first being either a K&N air filter or CAI.
1) Do i have to break it in first? If so how many miles?
2) I was looking at the engine before; how do i remove the stock air filter? Thanks.

Welcome, welcome!
And yes, there is a break in period. 1000 miles of h*ll where you must baby your engine and be nice. No redline, no hard starts, and no keeping the engine at the same rpm for long periods. It sucks, I know, I just finished mine, deflowered my baby at 1036 miles. But, the wait is worth it, read my post 'to redline and back' if you want to see how excited i was. Great cars and great engines.

It's really hard to accurately dyno a CAI, the benefits are realized only when moving and actually getting cooler air. IF you have a auto, I would suggest the CAI (many auto owners report a lack of low end torque), if you have a 5 speed, then go with either, most because if you think about it, once you starty moving the air inside the engine bay won't be as hot anymore.
Stillen vs PRCAI
performance wise its pretty close...just depends if u want to drill a hole in the fender of your car, if u dont mind the hole, i think it comes down to sound, the PRCAI is louder than Stillen, ive had both, i got the stillen first and then heard my friends ITR with a Iceman CAI...and i was like...i need more sound, PRCAI sounds louder and more aggressive but after about 5k RPM engine sound takes over, but its great sound after driving it around a few days.

Re: Stillen vs PRCAI
Im probably just gonna go for the regular $40 K&N air filter for now. I opened the engine, but can't open the air box to take the stock one out. How do I go about doing this? Also, should I remove the air silencer? Thanks.

ok, that worked, but i opened it, and its a screen-like filter. If i take the whole thing out, then i can put a conical filter in? is there ne thing else I have to do? thanks.

PRCAI vs Stillen/JWT
that makes perfect sense bc at high RPM the friction in the tubing for PRCAI seems to kill its power beyond 6000 RPMs...but since intake HP increase is relatively small i chose PRCAI for its sound...hehe...the sound isnt really clean...if u rev while using WOT, while in park...u can hear the intake, its loud but after about 4000-5000 RPM..the engine noise is much louder.
WELCOME! You should have came here first and bought my 2001 I30T, all the basic bolt ons are already included
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=54131
Also, if you get a Y-pipe, all I30s are 50 state spec, not 49 like some Maximas.

I think the only intake on the stock is that ram-air like thing at the front of the hood... it's not very wide when you look at it compared to the size of the tubing around the maf sensor...

a CAI would be a good start. I would wait until 1k miles before modding it though just so it breaks in a bit.
