New Clutch Cost- Dave B. vs Queens, NY

So...I was going to post this in the regional area, but I figured everyone could benefit from my clutch pricing experience.

At 34,000 miles, I began to hear a rattling noise coming from the transmission when I would accelerate and decelerate. Took the car into the shop and it turned out to be my clutch. My mechanic looked up several prices around the NYC area for the flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, and release bearing. Parts were quoted at around $1100 with the flywheel being the most expensive (~$700+). I was a little shocked by the price so, I decided to call Dave at Southpoint Nissan in Austin. The parts from Dave were half the cost. Even with shipping from Texas, I'm still saving about $500 on the total. My mechanic was so surprised by the price difference that he made me call Dave back just to make sure it was the same exact parts, which of course, they were. He's a great guy and I highly recommend using him for all your part buying needs.

It makes you wonder what is going on here in NYC. Dealerships have to be charging a lot more than the Nissan suggested price. How can there be such a big difference between 2 cities?

i completly agree with you. last time i bought O2 sensors from nissan koeppel(queens) they charged me $141 each. i tried to haggle thr price. they only can gave me $135 plus tax. nissan bayridge (brooklyn) gave me $120 plus tax (after i haggle the price). from my experience nissan koeppel is the worst for parts. nissan bayridge is the worst service advisors. Dave B is the best for the prices. no one can beat his price.

um...because you're paying a metropolitan dealer markup....

and dave b sells his parts at cost with little/no markup, since dealers get bonuses for selling MORE parts, even if they sell them for less...

650 isn't bad at all. The Stage 2 Exedy is around 700 on its own and the Fidanza flywheel I saw was 500. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.

I see me putting in a 350Z clutch and getting the flywheel machined though if I can find the info about what I'd need. At 93K my 2002 clutch is spent. I took the thing out today and it made me sad.

I don't know why other people replaced theirs, but I shouldn't need a new flywheel I'd think. It should survive machining. If I need a new one, the mech'll tell me after the fact.

I just want everything else together so they don't try to put another Maxima clutch back in there.

my flywheel has 230k on it and it's stock. my clutch pressure plate and throwout bearing ended up costing me around 160 shipped. + me installing it one afternoon. find an orger to do it for you cheap.

I have friends at a local place that'll do it for cheap. I'm in Maine, finding an Orger would probably be a 4-6 hour trip elsewhere

Mass is about 4 hours from here.. But I can get it done for virtually nothing somewhere here. The bigger concern is figuring out which one.

I do appreciate the offer however .

The car's not moving anywhere unless it has a clutch, the other one is so damaged that I'm driving another vehicle. Not sure what happened really, just started slipping a lot one day.

I've had several different clutch setups. My favorite, by far, is the Fidanza flywheel with a new 350Z clutch from Dave B.

The flywheel gives noticeable performance gains. The new 350Z clutch is the same as the Exedy stage1 for half the price. This setup feels better than stock and is strong enough to handle any modded 3.5 Maxima other than maybe a highly boosted car.

What did you need for the 350Z setup? Is it just a kit from Dave B or were there things you actually needed separately?

I'm kinda leaning that way because it sounds like it's likely the best setup of all.

It comes with everything but the throwout bearing. Dave B. knows all about it and what you need. Just tell him you want the clutch Derrick has. He'll know exactly what you need.

The flywheel is really nice. It gives the car a lighter feel when accelerating. You probably don't "need" it though.

I got it from Ultrarev.com I don't remember the exact price but I really shopped around for a good price. That was around two years ago though.
