Service Engine Soon light - O2 sensor

The orange "service engine soon" light came on a while back, so I took it to my mechanic to get the code and he told me that I needed an O2 sensor. He told me to take it into the dealer because he has replaced them before and eventually the light would come back on because the dealer has to reprogram the cars brain.

Anywho, I am taking my car into the local dealer service department tomorrow, how much should I expect to pay for this? I just want to have an idea of how much I can expect to pay because I don’t want to get raped.

Thanks guys...

what he told you is not true, after you replace the sensor, the code will cycle out and not come back on unless something sets it off again. no reprogram needed.

hmm...

if the code it is indeed for O2 sensor then you could easily change it yourself and there shouldnt be any need to reflash/reprogram ECU.

Now, the above is correct assuming the CEL code IS for the O2 sensor. Let's say you have for instance the PITA 0430, then changing the O2 sensor could not solve it.

I'd get the correct code info before spending any money... get it from a friend with OBD reader or just stop by autozone. Or even ask your mechanic that already did the diagnostics for the code number.

well.. so there it is: if you want to go the right way, first check at dealer if the TSB for a reflash applies to your car and then go from there.

If you want the quickie way, get a O2 sim and you good to go.

Stealer wanted to charge $99 for the reflash, which I honestly wanted to have done, BUT phuckers wanted my car for the whole day, which would make my life hell, so I chose to get the O2 sim at the end.

Wow.. by the way, I just realized you have 55K miles.. then it should all be covered under emissions warranty. go hard on them.
