Can you guys with a y-pipe on your 2K maximas tell me how you like the sound and performace of it on your cars? Do any of you have a y-pipe with the stock 2K muffler? You see I want better performance without being too loud. Do any of you experience a drone or a "bees in a can" type of sound with your y-pipe setup? The shop who did my SCer install quoted me $600.00 (which includes labor) to do a custom fabricated y-pipe on my car. Does this sound high?
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

$600 for a custom y-pipe is high. Why pay this when for $400 you can get a Cattman? Installation is a breeze. I installed mine in less than an hour. But, if you dont have the right tools, itd be better to pay a shop to do it.

I have the Cattman SS Y-pipe and Place Racing CAI on my otherwise stock 2k SE 5 speed. It is definitely louder than stock, but not annoying. I have noticed no drones. But, the exhaust tone has definitely changed some and the sound of the exhaust rushing out of the engine is more pronounced. The sounds created by the CAI and the Y-pipe are each distinctive from each other. I think it sounds great as stock was too quiet The only downside is that I now hit the rev limiter even more than before as I wring the revs up! The 2k's really need a raised rev limit. 6500 rpm is too low.

Aww.shoot....Youve got the charger kit! I forgot about that. I think the Y-pipe will really make a huge difference wih the charger.

I would say just go with the Stillen or Cattman unit,

they are both made for the purpose, you can argue about which is better, but I had a Stillen unit on my 4th gen and I never had any problems. Other than the Can in Bee's sound but that is normal for at times. For the price I would just stay with what has been known to work and they do provide great #'s.

DMan, this is the real thing

Hi DMan, I have Y2K Auto Trans.with Stillen YPipe,Stillen Highflow Filter and stock muffler. Larry "Madmax" and I have been doing researchs in this areas and beyond, I bet the manufacturers are a bit concerned about us with the real results.
I've tried the following combos:
Stillen YPipe(New Generation)with Stock Muffler = QUIET/Slight hiss under WOT(Wide Open Throtle),slight improvement in performance,
Stillen YPipe, and Stillen Muffler = LOUD/Droun Sound, worst performance, less low end torque,
Stillen YPipe + Place Racing CAI = Louder,no sinificant improvement in performance(Pure Growl),
Stillen YPipe + Stillen Highflow Air Filter = a bit quieter than the CAI, the CAI is louder... Even in the Puerto Rico's hot weather, seems that the Stillen combo is better. Later,I will post my ET's at the Strip wich are the real test combined with Larry's Dyno Results. By the way Stillen does not recomend YPipes in Auto Trans with SC.
Stillen YPipe $275.00 + SH
Stillen Hyghflow Filter $125.00 + SH

That's only if you don't have tranny upgrades (i.e. vb recal, level 10 rebuild, etc.). The vb recal should be enough to hold the power in check...

You should notice a nice power gain....

Loren said on a supercharged max the Y pipe is worth around 12-20hp. Since you already got the VB mod and tranny cooler go for it. But $600 is high for a custom Y pipe especially if its not SS. I would suggest not getting a catback because again Loren found only a 7hp difference between a straight pipe and stock muffler. IMHO its not worth it if you don't want drone or the sound. But from what I heard the Y pipe would give the car a deeper tone but not increase the decible level much if any.

what are the "Bees in a can" sound?

I would like if someone can explain what that sounds like... I have a Stillen Y-pipe. I installed it myself.. pain in the ***... there is a power differance.. I like it.. but there is this F@*#en sound coming from it that sounds like a exhaust leak.. a rattling sound..with a hiss... something like turbo'd cars but not as nice.. it's not bad, I guess.. but I want to know if it's normal. Also does anyone else have a problem with the exhaust piping hitting the bottom of the tunnel when accelerating... not all the time but when you really step on it. Specially if you are turning.... thunk..thunk... thunk.. I suspect it's because of the shortened and stiffer flex pipe that stillen uses to make his Y-pipe.

Anyways... I like it...sounds nice when I start my car... like a nice V8... not much louder than stock when at speed. I have the stock exhaust.

Re: Bees in a can + rattling sound

You wont get rid from the bees in a can sound, consider them your "Power Pets". The rattle might be the bracket that holds the Pipe near the Cat, provably is touching the upper side,if this is the case, I took mine to the muffler shop and they "shaved" the bracket with the solder gun, that was it, fixed. About the leaks, get a piece of garden hose 4-5 feets long, Gentlemen start your engine and make shure its safe with the hand brake, dive under the car and pretend you are a Doctor with the Stetoscope listening around the flanges and bolts for leaks, this might help, then correct if needed. Hey post your results for the benefit of others, good luck!

Cattman SS Y Pipe=$450. Installation for people like me with no mechanic skills=$80. $450+$80=$530. Still cheaper than what the custom is. I would rather trust Cattman who deals directly with Maximas rather than some shop experimenting with your car. I got my pipe for $400 with the Cattman group deal

I think Larry would beg to differ with you on that. With the Cattman y-pipe and CAI he significantly improved 1/4 mile times and mph.

In mine, I have the cattman ss y-pipe on a stock muffler. There is ZERO additional noise on the muffler side. The first install I got some serious putt-putt sound from right under the engine and I pulled the pipe off and re-seated the gaskets and now the putt-putt is gone 98% but you can still hear it at low idle or low cruise (like when I'm driving around town, I can hear it echoing off parked cars but not loud) or in reverse there is definite gurgle / putt-putt. But overall, I would say minimal noise increase.

On hard acceleration, overall there is more noise but it is a nice throaty noise from both the POP intake and the Y-pipe combo. It sounds nice, muscular, not loud and ricey.

Power increase -- I noticed an immediate increase. The thing really pulls much harder than it did. I am impressed with it but have not measured it.

Stay cool,
/aac

Yeah...I picked up about 2 mph in the quarter (from about 93 to 95 mph)....I consider that significant and worthwhile. Ill have dyno plots soon to show exactly what these mods add.
