Starting Issue...Help Please

I believe that I am having starting problems with my 2000 5spd. GXE. It starts up perfectly fine on a cold start, but on a warm start such as starting the car again after I shut it off to fill up the tank, the car starts up, but the RPMs dip down below 500 and almost stalls. At times, the engine cranks up and the RPMs raise up like normal, but on the way down, it drops below 500 and sometimes stalls out. I have recently replaced the starter and this problem existed prior and after the starter replacement. Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this problem? Thanks.

Misfire maybe... You change the spark plugs lately? Also would check your ignition coils while you were doing that.

No, I didn't change the plugs recently. But if it was an issue with the plugs or ignition coils, wouldn't the starting problem be consistent and happen during both cold start and warm start?

Have you replaced your MAF and reprogramed your ECM afterwards?

I had the same problem on my 2000 (auto) for about a year and a half but just lived with it because I couldn't figure out what it was. And it only happens after the car is running for awhile (stop for coffe or bank etc..) and never when the engine is cold.

I had to replace my MAF replaced recently because of poor performance at 3000-4000 rpm. It fixed the performance problem but still didn't fix the stall out problem. Then I took it to the dealer to reprogram to ECM which is recommended. Ever since the ECM reprogram the problem does not occur! I wasn't trying to fix the stall but the ECM reprogram fixed. It's been 2 weeks now and it has not recurred.

btw, I have replaced all the ignition coils, replaced the starter (died) and fuel pump on this car (died) and now the MAF.

It could be your MAF or your coilpacks. Check both out.

I've been having this problem. In fact, I've learned to live with it.
I created numerous threads here...Members recommended that I should clean the MAF...which I did, replaced the air filter, changed engine oil, it just doesn't go away...happens sometimes...not always & I just don't know how to fix this.

What is a fair price for a dealer to charge you to reprogram the ECM after replacing your MAF?

Not sure what is fair but my dealer (superior nissan puente hills) in the OC charged $104. Another dealer in buena park wanted $125.

That sounds like an IAC (idle air control) issue. Find the sensor and tap on it with a screwdriver.

Oh, ok. So it's around $100 for the MAF and another $100 or so for the reprogram?

You don't really need to reprogram it.
