My 2001 maxima with automic transmission seems to idle too fast. When stopped in drive or neutral, the idle speed will drop to from 900rpm to 600rpm after 20 - 30 seconds. When I am driving if I let off the gas pedal at 20mph, the car will continue cruise at 20mph on a level road. It will only slow if I apply the brakes or start going up a hill.

Also, the engine revs up to 1000rpm between downshifts at slow speeds (below 15mph)while braking. The downshifts are very rough. The car jerks between shifts. Again, like the engine is idling too fast.

I have reported the problem to the dealer. He tells me this is normal. I have never had an automatic that down shifts so poorly. The maxima is perfect otherwise.

Has any one else experienced this?

Are there any good dealers in Maryland (Washington DC Area) who are good trouble shooters?

When the car is warmed up, mine idles at around 600-700 rpm in drive and around 750-800 in neutral. Mine downshifts crisply though and there is no problem with the revs jumping up....

I am in MD also, and my experiences with Gaithersburg Nissan have been ok so far....

Have you had the tranny ECU problems addressed (eg slow shifts)? Maybe you can get the dealer to brainwash it and bring it up to the latest and greatest.
