Help !!-2001 Max for 98 3000gt??? Please talk me out of it
#1
Hi everyone,
I've run into a dilema here and would really appreciate some reassurance in talking me out of this possible decision. Recently, I feel like I need a 2 door sports car and to be honest, nothing out there floats my boat (that is except for a c5 of course!!-maybe one day we'll be together) I love the performance of the Max but it just doesn't grab the road like a 2door sports coupe. I know I'm opening myself up to an onterage of assaults, but the bottom line is that the max is lacking in the handling department. I have a fstb, and although it helps significantly, I still have to drive with two hands on the wheel when encountering even the slightest of twisty roads. (just don't feel all that confident) Please talk me out of the recent thought that has crossed my mind - trading in my Max for a 98 mitsubishi 3000gt with 32,000 miles on it. So far, here is what I have come up with.
Pros:
1) I'm taking a big chance with a near-new car priced used sports car, especially one that would be used as a daily driver.
2) Although I'm still a bit skeptical, there is always the good old RSB.
3) NISSAN vs mitsubishi
4) The people out on the maxima forum are some of the most helpful and friendliest people on earth.
5)Maxima hp = 222 vs. 3000gt sl hp = 215
Cons:
1) Were talking about a road hugging sports coupe (3000gt)that looks the part as well as talks the part.
2) One of the last of the no longer existant sporty sounding affordable coupes with a v6 from the land of the rising sun(Japan). Four cylinders just don't count.
3) Low mileage (32,000) miles.
Please talk me out of this flirtatious bag of candy that is being waved in front of my eyes. Any helpful advice and reassurance would be appreciated.

3k gt has alot of power and all avalible at low end...this is good for daily driving but racing it woun't continue to clime. It's sporter has a large aftermarket with some nice peices...however there at least as expensive if not more than the max parts.
But I say go for it if you don't need the max to carry stuff.

The 3k GT is a nice car, but is pretty heavy.... The SL only has 215 hp, and with so much weight, it isn't that quick. If it is handling you want, you can still get it with the maxima. FSTB, RSB, GC Coilovers, and Koni Yellows combined with sticky 17" or 18" tires will give you a pretty wicked suspension setup. Plus, the SL is not AWD like the VR4 version of the 3k GT. The maxima will still be a 4 dr sedan after all the suspension mods, but it won't handle like one....

Hey man, are you nuts?
The 2k1 Max is plenty fast man. If you want more handling, get the RSB first and see how you like it.
The car is not just about how fast it is, or how well it handles or how good it looks. You gotta have the best combination for your buck.
The 3000gt handles great. But that's about it for that car. It's not faster than your max. It looks pretty good, but you're gonna get sick of it within 2 years.
Now the 300zx twin turbo and the C5 are good cars because they handle good, are fast and look good too.
The Max has all 3 of those attributes. The 3000GT you're talkin about has only one, which is handling.
P.S.
Please no senseless flames such as
"Well, the M3 is faster than the Max " and stuff.

IMHO, if it's not the turbo version then it's not worth it. You definitely are faster than the SL version, so it's basically downgrading in speed (they're definitely heavier)... handling, I'm not sure which is better because I've never driven one (no AWD because it's an SL?).
I say keep the Max... but it's your decision.

ARE YOU NUTS
You're going to trade a good factory warranty, the SAFETY of a Maxima, the SPEED of a Maxima, the quality, the 5-seat capability (a very roomy 5 seater) with a nice big trunk, etc... for a 3000GT?
While that car looks tight, and very tight indeed does it look, that's about all I can vouch for it. I don't really like the way it drives compared to cars of similar status (maybe I'm ruined from driving a '99 porsche 911 occasionally)
AND you can do whatever you want to the Max to make it custom and sporty. The max is a much better car, even if the 3000GT (you said SL, right) is cool.
Plus the 3000GT is a ticket-earning car.

It May Be Sporty!! But Do This my Friend…
Go to Ward's Automotive site. This is the company that gives the Grammy award for engines every year. It doesn't get any higher than Ward's. Count how many years the Max's engine(VQ) has won, a record 7 times over BMW's (6)…and you know how Bimmers are made.
I rest my case…Choose wisely, my friend! and remember their's strength in numbers!!

Re: It May Be Sporty!! But Do This my Friend…
Have you checked any of the mags to see what the lateral g's are on the car and its slalom compared to the Max?
I'd bet a max with springs/fstb/rsb the max would easily outhandle a stock 3000 GT. Although the rear beam axle still sucks.
I like the look of the car but everytime I look at one that is not a VR4, I see a relatively slow sports car wannabe.
Keep the max.
