I am going on a road trip this weekend. My Max only has 100 miles on it. Is there a break in period? Should I keep the speed down?

yes the break in period is usually around 500 miles...you should keep the car at no more than 60mph...I didn't though...so maybe I should practice what I preach

I don't think the car can go that slow (60MPH).
The trip is for 6 hours on an open HWY. I hope I can keep my foot of the pedal!

I also heard that I should vary the speeds. Any thoughts on that?

Usually a good rule of thumb is not to drive you car for long periods of time when it is that new, but I have known people that have and their cars are fine. You will hear a lot of different views on this.

Not sure about varying the speeds...i had only 300 miels on the car when I hit 130mph on open highway...and I have noticed no problems with the engine...Use your cruise control!

Au contraire! i think you do NOT want to

use the cruise during the break-in period. You are supposed to vary the speed/rpms and not exceed 3000 rpms in any gear for the 1st 1000 miles. I know it will be a tough assignment, but i think it will make your engine a lot better for the longer term. RESIST, and there will be a reward.

Probably right...

I have a tendency to beat the crap out of things...usually they last though. He is probably giving good advise...but in all reality its probably better to NEVER go over 3000 rpm's... You'll have a better chance of seeing the SUN at midnight than you would see me doing that though... :vampire:

check owner's manual

it all depends on if you own the car or are just leasing it

3000 rpm?

how fast do you think people spin the engine when test driving cars... so it's safe to assume yours went through a few test drives.. but anyways try to vary your speed and don't redline it.. and keep it at the highest possible gear at all times... to lower your rpm's but if you must you must.. just change your oil after 500 miles... there are alot of metal particles from the break in period that you need to get rid of... so change your oil...

suspected breakin rules

From my dealer..

Breakin period - 1000 miles
Do NOT use cruise control, or keep it at one speed for long periods of time.
Do not exceed 4000 rpm's
I havn't heard anything about maximum speed, just rpm's
