235 isn't safe, period.

Does he takes the car to 120+?
Does he makes some turns at 110?
It all depends on how he drives.
I'm sure that at the higher speeds - the risk of having not the stock tire size on the stock wheel is getting much higher.

i'm on my second set already with no complications so far. as far as i'm concerned, the manufacturer's recommended sizes will always be on the conservative side for liability reasons so i have no problems pushing it, within reason.
having said that, my next set will most likely be pirelli's in their new offerings in the 225/50 size if for no other reason than peace of mind.

20 years ago my best friend was hesitating in travelling in an aircraft even if everyone was telling him that it is more safe to take an airplane than a car, he did'nt wanted to go but because he was afraid to travel by airplane, many other friends convinced him to take it, after reflexion he decided to go to his trip, that was the last time I saw him, the plane that he took that days crash and everyone died.
The lesson I would follow here is do what you think is best for you, make your own decision and let no one give you **** and make moral, if you feel it is safer to follow manufacturer rules do so but at the same time dont forget that a even a big manufacturer like Firestone can make mistake and people died from it.
So for me my own experience secure me more than anything that anyone can say, also because I've worked for a tire manufacturer few years ago and I know all the steps to build a tire cuz I did it myself. After the winter I am going to put another set of 235/45/17 on my 2K1 Max.
cheers

i've had more problems (some dangerously serious) with my stock bridgestones in the 225/50 than i have with my 235/45 yokohamas or bf goodriches. pick a reliable model and be reasonable in your size selection. it really should be that simple.
Adam, as for those who are adamant about staying with the stock size, i'm sure they're just watching your back. but whatever you do, fill in that wheelgap!
