Re: While Overdrive is off, I ...

I notice that my 6 pulls better with overdrive off, however I also notice that from 70 - 80+ mph (I didn't get to push it much more ran into traffic but will try it again) the rpm's increase from 3000 onward to 4300+ with very little speed increase. By that I mean, if I had the overdrive on I think the rpm's would be around 2400 onward to 3300+ at this speed.
Can someone explain to me what is going on here? Is it that without overdive the top gear is 3rd and I'm just approaching redline from there on? Or If I keep stepping into it will it change to 4th justat a higher rpm?
Thanks

I posted a similar Q a while ago.
Your car shifts like this:
OD off -> 1st, 2nd, locked 3rd
OD on -> 1st, 2nd, unlocked 3rd, unlocked 4th and then if you go easy on the accelerator you get a locked 4th
I still dunno whether acceleration with an unlocked or locked 3rd is better. To me, it SEEMS like the car is faster when 3rd is unlocked (O/D on) even though some people say power transfer is more efficient when the TC is locked. If that's the case, then why is the TC unlocked in 1st and 2nd? ---> torque multiplication. Timed 3rd gear runs is probably the easiest way to get an answer.

Calsonic: I remember our discussion on this before
I messed around with it a bit since then. I haven't timed runs or anything, but just from the feel of it, there doesn't seem to be a huge difference in third with O/D off or on. I suspect the kick you feel when you turn O/D back on while in 3rd is just the revs rising. But, for a given rpm, the car feels the same in 3rd with or without O/D on. So, you can leave O/D on, or turn it off when you are doing those top-speed runs....

With OD on the rpm soar a little more sluggish but @70 +mph the car gets stronger than it OD off side
one more question: will it just roll into redline if I keep stepping into 3rd (OD -off) and at what speed will it top off? Will this damage the TC?
