Experts please explain this disturbing phenomenon.

Ok, I'm racing against a 5spd Prelude in my 5spd 2k Max. We took it up to like 120 and I slowed down and was cruising around 70 mph.
Then all of a sudden I lose my power steering for several seconds, and you know the little red lights in the gauge area like the check oil, check engine, check airbag lights and stuff, they blinked once as they do when you start the car, and I got my power steering back. I did not hear any strange sounds or notice anything unusual. The car never did this before.

This is very disturbing. I did not take it to redline enough for a fuel cut. I know what fuel cut sounds like.

Anybody have any explanation? Maybe the ECU was confused. I cannot think of ANY reason why the car did this.

It sounds like your car stalled out.

geez...yeah, does sound like you car stalled for a sec there...you don't lose your powersteering and get those lights turned on unless your engine was choking...

i've redlined my car once, and even then, it wasn't like your case...

if you don't have any performance mods, just take it to the dealer for a thorough check-ups...

I've had a similar problem - except mine stalls.

If I'm going WOT, my car will sometimes stall if I hit the brake pretty hard and push in the clutch. I haven't figured out what is causing it yet - but it is disturbing.

It only happens when the a/c is not on - the a/c probably keeps the revs a bit higher. It'll act like it wants to stall, i.e. the rpms will drop to 500 and then come back up to 700.

Let me know if you figure out what is causing it. I know that it is not my udp since it did this prior to the udp.

The only thing that would allow the steering to do that would be a stall in the motor BUT he has a 5 speed the motor would still be rotating if he was in gear. If he was out of gear coasting that would make sence.

I have the same problem except mine did stall a couple times going into a turn. I took it to the dealer and told them it almost caused an accident. They updated the code in the ECU under warranty so it didn't cost anything. The idle still drops now like you describe but it hasn't stalled since the update.

Yea, it probably stalled and came back. Do you have a 5 speed? OOPs, you said that in the post. Yea, it stalled and since tranny engaged, it restarted it self.... I say have it checked out by a Nissan Dealer that doesn't screw with people... hmmm how many are out there? Oh wait, was it raining? Wet out? High humidity? I had a Cavalier that did that when it's raining. It would momentarily stall and come right back. 5 speed of course. hmmm... I would say get some of the sensors checked out or something...

I'd check all ignition at first....what if a wire got loose and is touching the hot engine..smthg like that

Well, since your car is a 2k, chances are there shouldn't be any loose wires touching the engine... except for the gear position sensor wire which has a covering on it that runs along the front of the 5sp tranny case. It could be a misfire and the computer shut the engine down and it restarted or something. Does this happen alot? Perhaps try to replicate what you were doing when it does happen. Since there are no spark plug wires definitely not wires. Could be coils but then if it is the coil then maybe all bad? I never figured out why my Cavalier stalls while I'm starting off in the rain. Maybe it's just electrical. I'm not really sure. It always came right back, could be injectors. Sorry dude, can't help you too much.

Wow you've only redlined it once? Uh oh, I've redlined it so many times I lost count. Is that horribly bad? I do know it is bad though... but I've never taken it past redline.

Hope you're kidding Redlining isn't bad, the engine is designed to do that. Just don't over do it. As going over it, well, as long as you don't shift to 1st while doing 90mph it won't happen too offen. That's what the rev limiter is for.
