Is a limited-slip differential realy necesary?

I ask this question because I am curently shoping for a Max SE 6 speed or Altima SE 5 speed.
The 6 speed Max will have a late availability (December) on the Helical limited-slip differential. The Altima does'nt have a limited-slip.I need a car before the end of my current lease (7 Nov. 01)

So...
Is it realy necesary to have one?
Will the car be undriveable in snow or rain?
Since the Altima does not have one, should I care if the Max does'nt?

Thank you for your help.

it's not really really really necessary unless you're going to supercharge your car and run higher boost>>more power...

in standard form..it's good to have a LSD because it will help you get better launches at drag strips and such...and also, when you do get to supercharge your car, then you'll really really need it..FWD cars become very unfriendly to traction when they push 350-400 to the crank...

No - not that important, but nice, especially if you live in an area with snow (but then you should be buying a WRX anyway).

If you get a lot of snow the WRX is the better choice, even than a Max with LSD - otherwise the Max is much nicer.

Thanks you all for your help,

I struck a deal with my dealer and they will give me a car on loan at the end of my current lease (November) until the HLSD comes in (December-January).

6 speed max fully loaded WITH HLSD.... HMMMMmmmm!
