Gated shifter

Do you guys think it is possible to put a 2k2 Maxima's gated shifter on a 2k Max? I think it could help those of us who like to manual shift our slush boxes (I always miss gears). IMHO one will need a new surround piece (this gray/wood thing from Center console to climate control), new shifter and possibly new linkage. Any ideas?

I don't think it is worth it. You'll have to get the whole shifter and everything. Plus where would would get it from...I highly doubt you'll find one in the junk yard. If you manually shift your auto, you might as well get a 5 spd...

How bad is a whole shifter? I mean it's not an [ignorance]extremely complex[/ignorance] part. Could probably get it new from a dealer... not sure how much though... plus this is more of an idea than a immediate need so I can wait till somebody runs a stop sign... .

I got a great deal on this particular car with this particular transimission (Actually wanted a '98SE Manual but got a 2k GXE auto for the same price) so there...

Yea I don't know how much one would cost. Probably around $200 or so. I understand where you are coming from with buying the car and all, because I was sort of in the same position. I originally wanted stick, but we found this car for a great price, so I said what the hell, why not. Good luck with it.

The shift assembly would probably be more like $300 or less. I replaced mine some time ago when I hacked up my shift ****.

I have heard the new shift console won't work on our cars, but the dimensions look the same. The internals underneath the shift-surround, such as the gear linkage and the shift lock mechanism may be different. Those two items alone would make it very difficult, not to mention if the shift surround did not fit our cars.

Perhaps David B could shed some light on it since he may have the exploded view of the shift console and everything else. He may also be willing to take some measurements of the shift surround itself.

I'll have to admit the first time I saw the gated shifter I had visions of swapping mine out.

NFW this would make any reality in terms of looks or performance.

Whats the point of a gated shifter anyway? I see lots of new cars with it, how is it any different than the normal shifters? I seems like more of a hassle if I have to move the shifter laterally and then vertically to get to the other positions?

Wouldn't it be easier to move it straight up?

i spoke to daveb about this very thing. according to him it's a no go. the shifter surround is a different shape, but more than that, the mechanism is apparently very different. there's more involved than just the shifter itself being switched out. my impression is that he's talking about the entire transmission.

you're right, not much point. But it looks really cool (although it would have made most sense w/ Tiptronic or similar), and moving the shifter isn't such a big deal (I like it! feels cool)

here's a nice pic that I took of my shifter.
