Is it safe to wash out the inside of headlight covers?

For some reason, on the inside of one of my headlights, there is dirt or whatever on the inside of the glass and I would like to clean it up. I took it to the local Nissan dealership and they said that there would be no way for them to fix that since it takes to much time and that it would be impossible to take apart the light. It seems to me that they didn't want to take the time to do the job. What I was planning on doing was taking apart the housing area and washing out the inside if that was possible. Has anyone done this before? Seems simple but not sure if it would screw up anything. Thanks.
