Why does this always happen to me?

Those who have met me in Toronto might remember I once owned a GTP (two actually) - a GM supercharged 3.8L... first one was stock and cracked a rod (there was a TSB for this), the second one was a plain lemon. Well.. it's GM...

In anycase, each GTP lasted about a year - the second was driven hard, and modded to a point. Eventually it started seeing so many unfixable problems, from TCC shudder to the passenger seat falling off the railing time and again - that i got rid of it and picked up a reliable Max.

The Max. saw maybe two high speed full throttle runs at St-Thomas : I don't race this car and figured why not push it a little bit just to see how it accelerates on the meter. All maintenance done exactly by the book (except I use castrol syntec on every change and make a point about it). It's at about 45k km right now, I've had it for just over a year... and lo & behold I've got a loud engine knock. It started last week when I
started up the car on Thursday.... a loud tapping sound was audible on throttle. The car wasn't driven at all since, and today I drove it to work - I can actually hear it now over the sound of my stereo 2000 Max...
I'm wondering maybe the timing belt is making noise a little early? I haven't put my ear down to the engine yet... I"ve sort of been hoping it'll go away ;/

Anyone else had any engine issues with their 2000 yet?

I have 44,000 miles on my 2K Maxima with no problems at all with the exception of the front rotor tsb and the transmission tsb. The engine idles whisper quiet.

Have you....

My HVAC makes some really loud noises...Try turning that thing off and see if that is the problem. I need to take my car to the dealer...that fan clicking is as loud as the engine itself.

Re: Have you....

I wish! I don't even use my A/C lol... and it's coming from the engine bay (there's a vibration, and it feels underpowered )

sounds like your engine is pinging if you are loosing power and the noise is audible like that. Have you switched to a different brand or octane of gas? You may want to try that first off (always stick with high octane though). Also, some people have had bad ignition coils that caused pinging. Since you are under the powertrain warranty, these should be covered. Also, any mods? What kind of transmission?

I've tried both Shell and Esso/Imperial Oil - I never run anything lower than 91 octane. 94 octane on occasion.
I haven't considered gas as the knocking sound upon startup is just too loud for bad gas to be the problem (pardon the pun ).

I'll bring it in next week sometime as I'm not driving it right now anyways <fingers crossed>.

Bring it in to the dealer. Engine and tranny are covered under warranty, granted it's not voided by the mods...
