Re: Altima test on Motor Trend TV
Seems like they like the good ole' GTP in Colorado.
I say Altima is going to be quicker off the line. On a roll it would be close.

I just drove a 3.5 SE tonight, unfortunately in automatic trim. But I was really impressed with the car's handling and power. It handles way better than my '00 SE, esp. considering it's a bigger car, and I would say it handles better than my brother's Taurus SHO and my friend's 325i.
I got in two completely unsolicited races -- the first against a Grand Prix GT (he purposely swung over into a merging lane at a stoplight and then inched on me), the second against a modded Si (who actually revved on me) -- and I literally smoked them both to 60+, even with the automatic. The Si (i/h/e and lowered) was a particularly fun one. We were both turning left, and because of the messed up angle of the turn, he had the speed advantage on the outside lane. Coming out of the turn he was already on it full bore and was at my passenger-side back door, but as soon as the auto kicked down I left him BAD. He caught back up to us in traffic and the sales guy put his window down and yelled "not a chance!"
(The sales guy was cool if you didn't guess).
I'll be going back to drive a 5-spd when they get one on the lot (they were supposed to have one -- I called ahead -- but of course when I got there they didn't know where it could be ... in other words, they just told me that to get me in the door). But even after driving the automatic, I know I'd be willing to overlook a couple minor fit-and-finish flaws (door panel trim, namely) to own a 3.5 SE for under $25K. The sales guy said they'll deal well below MSRP ... in fact, he says Nissan has strictly forbidden dealers from adding mark-ups on the new Altimas. And if you're looking for street racing material, this car apparently just begs people to race it!

I feel bad for the guy who buys the demo car :-)
When I did the test drives of the Max and Alti automatics I didn't drive them hard, yet I was able to pull away from ordinary vehicles.
I will go back again and see if I can take one out without the salesman. Doubt it but it would be fun!

by the way...
I forgot to mention this but today around 4:30 am on the beltway (I was taking a friend to Dulles) I got into it with a previous gen. Cobra...he got the jump...we started at about 70, and I shifted into 3rd, and I actually started pulling from him....and he kept trying to get away from me and he couldn't...all the way up to 130 mph. Afterwards he waved me up to talk and he was absolutely shocked when I told him it was a Maxima. heh heh heh heh
