getting in the dash
if you have the bose, you'll need the GXE radio assembly.
the center vent pulls straight out. If you try to pry from the sides, wrap your screwdriver with a rag and be very careful not to permanently dent your foam dash. I can actually grab mine and pull it staight out while wiggling it up and down alittle. this will expose the top two screws.
the bezel around the shifter is removed by removing the ash tray/pocket. you'll see one screw, remove it. Then you pry on the back of the bezel, on the end by the cup holders. *carefully* get a small screw driver up under the bezel and left up. It eventually lefts up enough to be unhinged from under the Climate controls. Again, cover that screw driver with tape or something. and be very careful not to dent the plastic trying to get leverage to pry it up. This exposes the last two screw (total 4). it all comes out.
Protect the sides of the radio (vinyl dash) with tape and the silver shifter plate with a towel. everything is very easy to rip/gouge/scratch. just take your time.

how does it look?
Does anyone have pics of a dash with an aftermarket stereo? I've considered replacing mine, but obviously it is going to require trim kit (or whatever) to fit the dash. I'm afraid of this turning out fugly.

gap
which ever aftermarket you go with (single din double din) u'l have a lil gap either on the top or on the bottom. and a small gap on the sides. you'll still have to fabricate a dash peice to make it look clean. i havn't got around doing it because i don't know what else i want to put above the cva-1005. maybe gauges but i'm flat broke. haha. and as far as the panel pulling, get a panel puller. if you don't want to use a putty knife they've worked real nice for me. it's thin fit's in tiny cracks and doesn't scratch anything if used right. no need for a rag. more surface area to pull less stress on certain parts of the dash.

crap
u see that's the crappy part about the maxima. i didn't want the premium sound system but wanted other things ie. sunroof leather heated seats. so if u say no to one item then u can't have the rest. nissan wont let u mix and match. i forgot what the premium sound includes but if u don't care about the things it includes then just get the tape deck. but imo i say just get the premium and swap it out. the speakers will work nicely with the aftermarket but just bypass the amp or else u'll have a amp hisss.

[I]Does anybody know if the 2K GXE comes with just a tape player? I was thinking that we can use that face plate to make the install look clean.
Yes The base model of GXE comes with a tape player and a tray under neath.. thats the base base 1.. I'm not sure right now about the options U need to upgrade to the next radio but the base GXE has tape. as far as the amp goes.. only the bose radio has amps in speakers/subs. the Base Tape and the middle trim radio doesn't have Amps on the speakers. if U R working on replaceing the bose with aftermarket and don't want to cut the wireings, call crutchfield and buy adapters that bypass the bose amp, otherwise U'ld have to bypass the power to the amp and connect the speakers directly to the radio. sorry if this is not makeing sence.. I'm tired, and will explain in the morning if anyone needs to know how..
