01 GXE Stereo Upgrade?

My friend just bought an 01 GXE 5-speed w/no options. It came with an AM/FM Cassette thats looks like its from a 4th gen GXE. He would like to know if it would be possible to install the AM/FM Cass/CD from the C&C Package. This is the non-Bose unit. He would also like to use 4 Polk 6 3/4 2way speakers. I think the radio will work but how about the speakers? Is the premium sound head unit 4 ohms? I know the preimun sound has 6 speakers. Are there 6 speaker outputs on the back of the unit or just four? I would like to know where Nissan put the crossover network for the front tweeters/woofers? Thanks in advance.

P.S. If anyone has removed their AM/FM CD/Tape unit and would like to sell it please let me know.

I have the same but a year older car. Why does your friend want to install that non-Bose unit? It is only 120 watt, has no remote, no sub output. Unless he can find one for $100 (junkyards sell for $500) he maybe better off by getting a double-DIN unit. I got a Clarion ADX 5655z for $320 shipped.

I saw Y2KMaxGXE-R 's system. It's really nice. He just needs the speakers to match. I have the midline premium system (non Bose). For my needs it's good.

sorry boyz I am so poor dont have a camera had to buy a GXE
I had the shop do the install, and the unit seems to be sticking out of the dash just bit. Because OEM units were designed by Nissan, they all match the interior...can't really say any aftermarket unit will look as good. Basically, you get aftermarket HU for performance and the display.

is the regular stereo (cd/cassete, non-bose) 120 per speaker or total?

120 total

If you are lucky, the radio will hit 120 total watts on a single bass hit. More realistically, it will never get to that point. Real power is more like 20 RMS watts (5 per speaker). The six spekers are actually four speaker outputs. Then the fronts go through a crossover, that seperates the highs to the tweeters, and the rest to the lower speaker (mid-woofer). I would go aftermarket. More power, better display, more functions, much better value than factory. If you had the bose, it is a bit more difficult to upgrade due to separate amps.

Thanks for all of your input. Let me put all of the info together. It looks like my friend has two options:

1) Buy a used Premium sound AM/FM Tape/CD unit and 4 aftermarket speakers and hook them up to the 4 speaker outputs on the back of the head unit. I'm assuming the base GXE wiring harness is the same at the head as the premium sound since the tweeter/woofer is split on the speaker side.

2) Buy an aftermarket head unit and speakers (Preferred Method). Are there any aftermarket radios that flush mount? I put a Kenwood in my sister's Toyota that has the same side mounting system as the Maxima and the face sticks out. Are there any radios that the face would be flush with the console?

Go to Crutchfiled.com or call them up and talk to a tech advisor, see what they may suggest. You dont have to buy from them (too friggin expensive) but can use free advice on what will fit.
