2001 AE Tranny problem....can it be swapped?

So my tranny is leaking galore! its got some serious gear noise, I'm supposed to bring it in to a tranny specialist on monday, until then I don't kno what's wrong. The guy said it was rare to find a 5 spd 2001 AE tranny, I managed to find a 6 spd 2002 tranny for pretty cheap. I was wondering if a swap is possible?

Thanks

possible, but not by any means easy.

5sp is linkage operated, 6sp is cable operated
you'll have to fab tranny mounts
you'll need the 6sp bellhousing

plus some more stuff that i forgot.

Sounds like you may have to have the tranny rebuilt.

How many miles on your AE?

I have an '01 AE auto s well with 100K. I'm wondering if my tranny will start to head south as well. It's not as responsive as it used to be, even with a fluid and filter change.

i doubt that would be brand new, rebuilt one probably, cheaper to get a used one with low miles.

Been a long time since posting. Site not as lively as it once was. I'm here by way of the search feature . My AE 2001 5sp tranny is getting on it's last legs. I came across a 6sp Canadian transmission which i see from this thread will not be an easy swap. Looks like rebuild is the way to go. My transmission mech told me the parts would be hard to find . Can anyone suggest where to find parts for the rebuild? FYI she is currently at 299K +. I know she has more life left in her.

You might be better off just finding another MT junkyard/parts car and swapping that over, i dont think parts for the 5spds have been around for a long, long time. 6 speed stuff is surprisingly still readily available. 7th gen VQ35 + 6spd HLSD swap? Lol.
