finally, a real race
finally, a real race
well after racing a UPS truck, camry, and s2000 i finally got into a 'real' race tonight.
it started out just weaving in and out of traffic at dusk and i see a pair of white lights on my right side. ahead is a red light with a brand new passat waiting in front of me. i pull to the right of it in front of the car with the white lights. i'm just checking out the wheels and the rotors on the passat when the light goes green and the guy guns it. i wasn't even thinking of racing so he shoots ahead a couple car lengths. but no point in pursuing it cuz there's another red just ahead so i just pull up next to him again. now the car behind me pulls to my right in the slow lane and it turns out to be some asian dude in an is300. we make eye contact and kinda nod to each other. figuring the passat guy's good to go too, i get ready to torque brake and i shift my trusty auto all the way back and kill OD.
the light finally turns green and i jump out ahead about a half car length on both of em with a bit of hop but i'm not pulling away. in fact, the is300 starts pulling on me a lot stronger than i would have hoped. he's coming up to even with me when i remember to shift at ~6000. short hesitation for the tranny to engage then it's off to the races. the passat's in the rear view mirror by now so it's just me and the lexus. we run even for a while then i shift again at ~60-65 (don't know my revs) and i start walking the guy. i had a car length lead by the time i shut down at 95 due to a 'lanes merging' sign up ahead.
he pulls up to me at a stop sign and he's smiling when he gives me a thumbs up. wow. lotsa fun. and i'm very proud of my stock max.

With a CAI and y pipe, you won't have to manually shift.

IS300 is no match..
I raced a IS300 with a stock 2001 Maxima Automatic Transmission, and took his shirt right off him... he couldn't believe it.. but was a really good sport when I pulled over to the side just to let him catch up

Had a 99 max se auto, now own a 2k2 is300 auto. from 0-60 these are very two are very close. where the is shines is unique styling, braking, handling, squeak/rattle free, perfect paint, high quality everything..in other words it's a lexus. also, here in AZ i don't see many of them tooling around. for those of you 'dieing' to race one, i'll save you the anticipation: with only 215hp in the is any 5spd max can wup it and any 2k+ auto should be able to edge it out.
