Dual Exhaust [photoshop]

I always pondered about a 5th generation maxima with Dual mufflers, either single or dual tipped ones.

Now I have no idea if there is even clearance under there, but I went ahead and used photoshop to get an idea of what it would look like.

Has anyone else considered this?

I didn't have a good angle of my car, so I picked two cars from the great picture thread ( I hope the owners don't mind ).

Here I changed the rear bumper lip to something I think would look nice, cut out the middle divider from the spoiler, got rid of the nissan emblem, and tinted the rear lights a little.


And on this second one, was a quick one ( i believe this is the cattman muffler ?).


what do you think ?

there was such a system, back in the day of custom enterprise until they went out of business, it was a wierd unique setup they had but it worked

someone from MA has an actual dual outlet, single muffler, single tipped system. i think his screen name is pearlwhitemax00.. not exactly sure on the spelling..

i bought my suspension off of him for dirt cheap and he was a cool guy too..

nice photoshop though.. alot better than what i can whip up LOL looks nice too

Looks better. I do like dual exhaust.
I also want to do some modification to the additional exhaust.
Most of people change exhaust b/c of the sound. But sometimes, it seems too loud. So I think we could try the butterfly valve to change exhaust from one to another..Just thinking.

If two mufflers could fit , I think this would not only sound great, but I'm sure with headers, it would not be as loud as a single muffler.

No performance difference I'm sure. but I'm a fan of dual everything . you have two round taillights, might as well have two mufflers.

there will be an effect on performance - the extra weight in the back of your car.....

how does dual mufflers have anything to do with sounding good or bad. it all depends on what muffler/resonator setup you use...

get some dual 15" subs in a big heavy box for the trunk while you're at it.....that way you can just ride around on the bumpstops all day

There was also a dual setup posted by a guy in Europe on his I30. It even had underneath pics too, he looped his around the spare wheel well.

again, depends on the muffler. Your stock muffler will be alot quieter than two Greddy mufflers.....

A frankencar muffler will be alot quieter than two Cattman mufflers.

And I'm not so sure how much quieter two are than one anyhow. If quiet is what you want, just have a shop mount up a second stock muffler, lol..

my previous car, ford contour. the SVT line-up had dual exhaust.

I bought this guy svt exhaust and installed on my zetec. sounded absolutely nice with the intake. and he installed a true-dual SS exhaust all the way back to the tip.


I wish the 5.5 gens had the dual exhaust so i could easily upgrade my car.

Of course there are, this isn't a priority of mine, just only an idea that is out there and its available . At least I'm not trying to put tornado air into my intake

I've always liked the look of the dual exhaust on the Altima 3.5 and the newer maximas... I wish there would be a setup out there for our 5th gens.

any competent exhaust shop can build you a dual exhaust setup relatively easily....

but let's rephrase...the Altima does not have dual exhaust. It has a single exhaust that splits into two mufflers/tips.

Dual exhaust typically requires a longitudinally mounted engine with seperate exhaust pipes coming from each side of the headers and never joining...

True duals, yes. A 'dual exhaust' is generally just two tailpipes exiting the rear of the car. None of that longitudinal crap around here.

By 'never joining', do you mean you don't consider true duals with an X/H pipe a dual exhaust?

This setup SHOULD be called "dual mufflers", as that's what it actually is.



A "dual exhaust" should be exactly that, two exhaust systems on the car. Difference is, a dual exhaust eliminates some back pressure which increases performance.
Dual mufflers, on the other hand, is still one exhaust split into two mufflers, same back pressure, same performance.

Great discussion on the "technical" definition of dual exhaust vs. dual mufflers.....

Anyways, from looking at it briefly I seem to remember that the evap canister is directly in the way of mounting a 2nd muffler on the left side of the car on a 5th gen maxima...if not I would have done a "dual muffler" setup on my car.

i think its a good idea, if altimas and other 4cyl cars can have dual why not the maxima? maxima isnt really the ultimate performance car. so why not add some style?

???? Dual exhaust ARE always joined briefly at ONE point. That point is right after the collectors of the manifold. The actual pipe is usually called either an H or X pipe. They create a scavenging effect on the exhaust gasses, helping to suck in more oxygen during the valve overlap.

And dual exhaust doesn't REQUIRE a N/S engine layout. It just makes the packaging easier. What dual exhaust requires is enough room underneath to run two large pipes front to back. If the 5th gen is anything like my 3rd gen underneath there isn't and extra room really.

I'm not sure how you can be so sure that there would be no gain. Sure, just welding some tubing together and popping some phat mufflers on don't gaurantee anything, nor does shiny stainless systems. But I have seen well engineering systems do wonders even over pretty well engineered OEM systems. And with care, even with a dual system you can end up with a lighter system since OEMS tend to use huge, overly heavy mufflers to begin with.
