MAF, O2 sensors replaced but car still sluggish..

So I had two codes in the last 3 months...one to replace the MAF and the other to replace the O2 Sensors at the catalytic coverter...all is done and no codes as of yet. However, the car seems to have rough starts which lasts around 40 seconds and then its smooth idle. At the 3000-4000rpm range, car is sluggish, no 'pep' at all. Sounds like the motor is hindered when RPM is in that range or its in safety mode...does it take awhile for the ECU to learn the air/ fuel ration again or what?

did you have the ECU reprogrammed? That will cause it not to know what is going on with the air/fuel and run kinda funky. It will take a little while for the computer to learn the exact readings. You may want to check your VIAS system, coule improve performance, what year is it so we all know.

I had just posted about my MAF replacement experience today using a hint from another org member to run your car without the MAF connector attached (throws a 0101 code, I think for MAF malfunction, but easily reset) for about 30 seconds which causes the ECM to dump its old air/fuel mixture table and allows you to begin the rebuild. I ran mine for about a minute with it disconnected, shut it off. Reconnected the MAF, and then restarted and let it run for about five minutes. I took off for a drive and it feels like a new car again.

car is a 2001, and no I havent had the ECU reset...can it be done using the tool that checks the code..i think its a scanner of somesort? For now I'll what Akansai recommends...but when the 0101 code is set off, do I need the scanner to reset? or will it reset itself?

thx for the help so far...i appreciate it.

If your MAF sensor was defective and you continued to use your car it is possible you ruined your CAT. Your MAF may have been telling your ECM to dump as much fuel as possible and it may have been so much that it didn't get burned therefore raw gas would have gone out your exhaust and may have destroyed your CAT. Now the CAT may be partially blocked causing a restriction in the exhaust which is causing your problem. If you have the stock Y-pipe it is possibly your pre-CATS in the y-pipe. This would also explain an inefficient O2 code.

For my car to reset, I usually unplug the battery for like 4hrs minimum.
Hows ur gas mileage anyway as in how many miles u can squeeze out from one tank.

Quickest, painless way to reset your code is to get your local auto parts store to do it for you. You can also check to see if there are more SES codes looming (active and pending) to get a better diagnosis.

they are talking about resetting the ecu so it "learns" the new maf, not dumping the codes.

yeah, don't let that happen or you'll blow your engine (speaks from experience with clogged cat haha).

Did you have your ECU software version checked?

Take a look at http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=538422

i have an 01 se with 90 some thousand miles and had the ses code you all speak of. took it to my local mechanic who seems trustworthy although he seems to be more of a domestic car guy. he replaced the 02 sensor and the light went off for about a week. the light comes and goes and im getting bad mileage (about 20, i used to get almost 30) i had a stalling problem last fall just before i got the 02 replaced. it fixed that problem, but the mechanic said the new code was for another 02 sensor. i've read about a million posts on here about new mafs and o2's and unhooking the maf and reprogramming the ecu, but most of them pick up after the owner had a ton of stuff replaced. im trying to avoid replacing too much. where do i start? straight to a new maf? if so, what tools are needed, and what about unhooking it and.or ecu reprogramming? or should i keep replacing 02's? basically i have seen all the suggestions, but im not sure of the order i should start with. sorry for rambling. any help is appreciated. thanks
