problems with LED lights
problems with LED lights
i installed some led's on my car(the door lights), and found that the LED's stay very dimly on when the doors are closed and the car is armed, i used some cheap led's so i re did it this time with led's from radioshack $5 a piece 2 on each side, and is still the same what am i doing wrong here?

My LEDs are doing the same thing. They usually turn off after 30 minutes or whatever the time limit is. Until then, they are very dimly lit but I can see them on through my tint. After a period, they should turn off completely, or drop the voltage enough not to see them. I believe on is around 11.85 volts, when your car is armed around 7 volts and locked, I think around 3 volts.
A few things...
You're car does not put out 12 volts at all. While the engine is off... the battery is putting 12.5 volts. While the engine is on, the alternator is putting off 14.5 volts.
NOW. the Aux lighting (dome, map, etc etc) is actually putting out around 3.25 volts while everything is off. No matter what. This will make your LEDs light up.
What I've done to fix this, is put in a Low-Drop-off voltage regulator in before this to cut down the voltage to 12v. You can NOT use a regular 12 volt regulator (LM7812) because the drop off voltage is at least 1.5 volts so your input voltage must be that much higher than the desired output voltage. You will need to put a heatsync and capacitors onto this regulator to get your desired result.
THIS IS DIRECTED TO The Law!!
Please get in contact with Z or myself about your dome light. I have the fix now and want you to send me back your lights. I will remake them and send them back with the new regulator put in.

This is the setup I've been doing, and I've always got the brighties in the car. At this point, I don't really remember the relay terminal numbers. But it's really easy to find out.

Relating to your diagram on looseleaf paper, your LED's are lined up in double series circuits. The first LEd will be slightest, the second LED a bit dimmer, then dimmest on the 3rd LED. If you have them LED's placed so that they all share the same wire for power, then that becomes parallel, and they will all get the 12 volts as current runs through them.
