Any way to Duplicate Key cheap?
Is there any way for me to get a duplicate of my I30 key made for cheap? I assume all of you Max owners have the same system, chip in your key, is that correct?
I checked through the FAQ and PR-Search.

No home depot has a company that's usually there during the day and programs and cuts your key for $60. If not a home depot employee always cut you a key from the blank but not program it. Since I work there and usually cut keys I actually went and looked at the machine they use. It pretty much just clones the code in your key and you're ready to go. Some keys you can also program just by putting it in the ignition. I've only seen fords do that though. There is one other way but I don't remember how.

Taping the key would work but it defeats the purpose of having chipped keys and defeats the purpose of the immobilizer from the factory :/
Some locksmiths can both cut chipped keys and do the programming. The dealers usually use consult II. AFAIK, the programming actually happens to the car not the key. I think people think something happens with the key. The car needs to be told to recognize the key. Whether you do it with a dealer or locksmith you have to bring ALL keys you have for your car otherwise your old keys won't work after the programming.
Last thing, check www.streetkeys.com for a more inexpensiv alternative.

I'd call the dealer back and ask them how much to simply program the key, NOT buy a new one programmed. I called 2 dealers nearby and was quoted $37.50 and $35 to program the key if I supplied the blanks. Cutting the key was $12 at the latter and $10 at the former.

^ i have been using my home depot key since i bought the car back in sept without no problems.
had them make the key for the altima before also
you have to fill a form with your license plate #, VIN number, name, address, drivers license #, etc

What do they charge to do this? I only got one key when I bought my car. It would be nice to have a duplicate.

alrighty then.... $60 would be the cheapest way to duplicate a key for our max right?... cause I too only have 1 key for my car...

I'd recommend picking up some blanks off Ebay and having the dealer cut/program them. I paid about $70 (including tax) for 2 blanks to add to the 2 I already had (needed 1 extra for remote start).

Never made it down to Home Depot today, but with rain in the forecast through Wednesday, I probably won't be detailing too many cars so I'll have time. I guess I should bring in my proof of insurance card since it has the VIN # on it and has the same name and address as my driver's license. That ought to be enough proof it is my car.

$50 + Ebay Key
I've just got mine done, forgot how much I paid on ebay (less than $25?) + $50 at the dealer.
At first they were giving me a hardtime for using a ebay key, but it all worked out fine.

Has anyone been able to get an un-chipped blank cut for the strict purpose of unlocking the door ONLY? I checked with Lowes and they absolutely do not cut keys that are chipped. They have a machine that checks if the car key has one.
