Am I ASKING for trouble?

Found a mint 2003 Max with only 24,000 miles on it, a few months warranty left. The car is showroom and on test drive, drives withour a hint of issues. The ONLY thing that now stands between me and the deal is the owners comment near the end of our discusssion that since he bought the car new, he has NEVER bothered using premium fuel...always the Regular grades. Is this just asking for problems waiting to happen?
thanks

The seller is dumb... But that would not stop me from buying the car.

depends on how much the seller wants for it... but I don't think thats such a big problem as it only has 24,000 miles on it

With only 24K on the car the only damage that could have possibly done is to the Knock Sensor. IIRC the Knock Sensor does not throw an SES light so you'd have to pull the codes to be sure. Either way that definitely wouldn't stop me from buying that car.

I would still get it. With 24K the lowgrade gas shouldn't be an issue. I agree with wyche89, just put premium as soon as you get it. Good luck!

in australia, nissan never told any one to use premium!! so every one puts in 91 RON fuel, instead of 98 or 100.

our maxima runs fine on blend (10% ethanol) it occasionally pings but not for long as the knock sensors retard the timing till it stops,

personally i wouldnt worry about it not being run on premium, i run my turbo R31 on regular instead of 98 or 100 RON it goes fine i only really do it on long highway trips where its sitting on 3000RPM for extended periods.... it also depends how the car was driven, i bet its probably never been reved past 4.5K

i doubt there would be any "damage" . ask the dealer to check if the timing has been retarded and if so set it back to stock.

im guessing they did that because here in the states 91 or 93 is premium, depending on where you live. 98 or 100 is pretty much race gas

I was just going to ask, what's regular in the states? In Canada here, we have 87 Regular, 89, and 91 Premium... I read in the Nissan book that came with my Maxima that you need 91... I'd still buy that car too though!

thanks for the comments

the car is in Canada, so running on regular grade canadian fuel as noted above. The drive away price is 15,000, which includes about 14% in government sales taxes.

Regular in the States is 87, also. Midgrade is still 89, and premium varies from place to place. For instance, in Cookeville where I go to school most places have 91, with some selling 92 or 93. I've seen pumps with 5 grades in the South: 87, 89, 91 (bottom-line premium), 93, and 93.5.

Using lower gas just means the engine won't run at its max power...

The car is fine, buy it.

i got my max with 49,000 miles, the previous owners were definitely using regular gas. since I got it i've been putting in premium and I havent had any trouble so far, Ocassionally I would hear a "pinging" sound, which I was told could be because of the use of regular gas.

it isnt just about the gas...its indicative of something larger

if he didnt care to use the proper gas, it shows he didnt really care about the car and probably didnt properly take care of it.
