If you have a chance could you do 80mph and 90mph?

I don't pay attention to my RPMs below the speed limit(75mph).

Thanks.

Congrats on the 6-speed! Once your broken in, I'd be interested in what kind of highway mpg your getting. I have a 2K1 5spd, doing mostly highway driving at 65-75mpg and average 24mpg.

If the mpg difference is that much better in the 2K2 5spd, I might be able to justify trading in my 2K1 for a 2K2!

Yeah, mine does 3k at 73mph, and just a hair above 4k at 100mph. I want a freakin 6 speed.

Paul, first off, thanks for the info. According to MT, The Altima SE turns 2300rpms at 60mph in 5th (if I remeber correctly). I assume that info was wrong, b/c if it isn't, the Altima is geared significantly lower. Maybe thats why some claim they feel faster.

Thatll be a stretch! But hey, sometimes justification helps, particularly if youve got the wife to convince!

yep...5spd: higher rpms, more noise, increased fuel consumption. My friend owns a 2k Accord 5 spd, his RPMs came down after the break-in.I hoped for the same...did anybody here installed different gears on 5th gen manual tranny?

break-in rpm

My speedo is reading slightly higher speed per RPM than it did previous.

4 months ago was 19000 miles
currently 26500 miles

80 MPH in 5th gear
------------------
4 months ago = 3250rpm
current = 3000rpm

My car feels faster now then it did 4 months ago as well.(butt dyno)

I can imagine that the 6 speed will eventually see some improvement as time passes.

I don't really know my mileage yet. I gassed up once, but I didn't check. The computer said 20.5 and I do mostly city driving. I gassed up a full tank and will compute it manually at my next fillup.

Is there a FINAL drive gear in a 6-speed?

I mean with RWD you can change to a taller(or is that shorter?) rear-end, so you can get more power down low. This of course decreases gas mileage by increasing the rpms, but with 2-overdrives you don't have as much to worry about.

Just a thought.

That makes absolutely NO sense at all....5-speeds don't have torque converters so at ANY given RPM in ANY given gear the speed is ALWAYS the same....ever wonder why a manual doens't drop engine RPMs when you let off the gas....cuz it's DIRECTLY connected to the engine via the clutch so RPM CANNOT vary with the same speed in the same gear....it's physically impossible.

It only has enough HP and gearing to go about 152-155. However it may be limited to 149 by the rating of the tires. If it had enough HP to pull 6th to the redline it would go 200.

Exactly! I like when folks install a new exhaust or something along those lines and say their RPMs are lower because of it. LOL.

is it true that when your car is new, the computer is "learning", and making RPMs actually lower after the break-in period?

Hmmm.......the gears probably got bigger during breaking....most metal expands!

It may make no sense; but, for whatever reason, its true.
I have yet to pinpoint the exact reason for this but I didn't rule out break-in as possibility.
I had the fuel cut TSB done in June. Before the ECU was changed it ran at 3100rpm at 80mph(July=3250, Now=3000). This is just my observation. I don't have a full understanding of all the varibles involved. So, this was one assumtion.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but could speedo calibration also potentially be responsible for this change, or maybe it could be that the tire pressure was/is way off(I admit I don't check it very often). My tire tread also has 7500 miles less rubber(What effect might this have?).
I also noticed, for what its worth, that it tends to read slightly lower(rpm) when its colder out.(I have no idea why?)
The car does seem slightly quicker now than it did. Maybe the seasonal change has something to do with this, but when I shift from 1st to 2nd at 6700 rpm(just before the limiter kicks in at around 30mph)I can now spin the wheels for a few feet, where before, they would barely chirp.

I'm only asking for answers & solutions.

I do feel that Paul's new car(Congratulations, you're car kicks ***) will experience improved performance over time. I also sure Paul will modify his car ,so, we will never know just how much it improves on its own.

does anyone know how fast can a 2k1 maxima 5 speed manual go? my old taurus managed only 110 cos the speedometer has only 110 and that sucks. but since the 2k1 max have high torque I have yet to push the car to the limit.

2k2 Auto here

Just for the record

At 80mph the tach stays at around 2700 - 2800 with 2900m on the engine. Went down from 3k (or so) when i first got it.

So far, here's what i get in terms of mileage: (mostly city driving)

* Based on Trip Computer *
20.5 mpg

* Based on my own calculation *
18.5 mpg

How did i calculate it? Refer to my previous post: (Take note, i gas up using the same exact pump in the same exact station all the time so the "auto cut-off" from the pump should remain the same)

I have almost 3000 miles on my 02 and to date here's what i found out:

1) The trip computer is not accurate
2) I calculate base on this formula:

- Reset your mileage counter
- Right after you fill-up on gas take note of how much you put. (Btw, i let the pump fill it up by itself until it cuts off to make sure i put the same amount of gas all the time when i fill-up)

- Divide your number of miles with the amount of gas recently put
- You get a closer estimate of your mileage.

3) During the first 1,000 miles of mostly "grandma"-like driving i averaged 17.2 miles per gallon

As miles racked up, i've been getting between 18 - 19 miles per gallon. All these on all city driving during rush-hour (Houston)

I was able to get 21 miles per gallon on mixed highway/city after my first 1500 miles.

But if i average all my mpg for the first 2900 miles it still comes up to only 18.5mpg

my 2k se with the 16" wheels hits the limiter at 138.. (presuming my speedo was right)

it pulled all the way to that point...
